Isn't your air intake somewhere behind the radiator grill and so hard to access? And earlier in the thread someone described how clothing used for the purpose can end up being dragged in by the huge suction generated by a runaway engine.

I guess we can all speculate about what we might do in this scenario whilst sprawled in front of our computers, but obviously having a workable and effective action plan of specific actions is a good idea if you really are worried that it could happen to your vehicle (and then running through those plans just to make sure you can actually access the air intake, etc).

I don't know if anyone has tried stopping a diesel engine by blocking the air intake but it's not that easy. I have a narrowboat with a BMC 1.8 diesel that has an electric fuel cutoff. This has been known to fail and the only way I can stop the engine is by undoing the injector supply. That's why I have a spanner on a hook next to the engine.
