Removing a burred rusty interior trim screw?
Hi, The two screws that fix the plastic trim surrounding the handbrake lever on my car are rusty. I've been able to remove one of them quite easily. The other one has a burred head and won't come out. Does anyone have any tips on removing it? The method of hitting the screwdriver with a hammer would probably break the plastic trim. I think the main problem is just getting the screwdriver to grip on the screw head. Maybe there's a cheapish tool that can do this?

Could you just very carefully drill out the head? Maybe using a Dremel or similar?

Hi OBV, if you have a Dremel, you could be v.careful and use it (the circular grinder) to turn the crosshead into a slot.
Or, alternatively drill a very small hole in the middle of the"cross"and then use a tap to remove the screw. I've not been out to look at this (on my 740) before replying, so my suggestion could be rubbish! Prufrock. |

If it happens again I have seen special drill bits for the removal of burred screws as well as special sockets for removal of burred nuts in my local tool suppliers. My local garage uses them and find they work well.
