Default Painting Grill

Ive had the paint on the book, roof and bonnet on my 1979 244 redone, (the lacquer was peeling) and it looks great, starting to notice now though that the black grill is looking faded.

Any tips on respraying this myself?

Never tried this - though have improved things with some of the plastic renovation sprays that you can get. The results never last for long though.

I guess that if its old and faded then the surface will be slightly matt - proving a good 'key' from some spray paint. One aerosol can ought to do a couple of coats.

Plastidip. Don't bother with normal paint because it chips. Plastidip is a rubber coating that doesn't chip and can be peeled off.

Did you try bringing up the black plastic with Autoglym bumpercare? I find it very good and on my Tank I brought back the mirrors to black as well as the bumper and grille.

Removed the grill last Saturday, gave it a quick wash, and then sat on the grass with a couple of old toothbrushes and gave it a thorough cleaning.

Masked off the badge and "silver" bits,

Sprayed 4 coats, 15 mins between them, it builds up to a rubbery finish.
Removed the masking tape, which had a tendency to catch and pull off some of the plasitcoat, (which is a disadvantage of that rubbery finish)

Nice matt finish, pretty happy with it over all, hope it will last.

You could do it Gloss Black like the current trend .. The secret to it bonding to the grille for years is a dedicated primer though , give the grille a good clean with a toothbrush and brake cleaner or similar to get rid of dirt and grease then use volvo primer 1161765 which is perfect for this task , then put your paint on top . This primer is also ideal for a base when gluing .
