Default Dolby center speaker

Is it possible to fit a Dolby center seaker to a standard dash top?

The dash top is different for Dolby systems, there is a hole for the centre speaker, of course one could cut a hole in the dash, but how aesthetic the result would be is another matter.

The dash is different, so you would need to get a dash top with the speaker already fitted. Also, the head unit needs to be capable of supporting the Dolby system as the dash top speaker is controlled independently to the other ones.

Thanks for the replies, I figured the dash looked different with a recess in it. I've got the right head unit SC 901.

one will pop up on a breaker car. Maybe Minty or somebody has one to hand. Most common on the C70s, not many S and Vs got them besides the Rs

There was a write up on a site a while back, detailing putting a speaker in, as I remember it was quite involved. It might have been on this site, Swedespeed or MVS. It had great pictures -hopefully the pictures are still accessible, but involved cutting, fibreglassing and all kinds of shenanigans.

Even if you have the sc901 head unit, you will need the Dolby processing unit and mountings for it. Big silver box between radio and heater, with one thick lead on it.
Also make sure you get the speaker wire loom for it. To save hassle.
Check the speaker very carefully. It is a odd type with the coil above the cone. The early ones have a tendency for the magnet to come off, and a lot of them are damaged so the coil rubs when in use or just plain burnt out.
I have fitted one in my V70R along with a C70 Amplifier and C70 speakers.
The SC901 is a good sounding unit if you have a fully working one. It was a high quality unit at the time , but a good Alpine or similar radio will sound better, as long as you get one with a processer to drive the central speaker. Twenty years of progress, even with the same amp , As I have tried , but the Volvo one looks better.

The best way to do it would be to have a fiberglass mold made for the center speaker and paint that to match either your exterior vehicle color or have it trimmed in material similar to your dash.

You could always go for a big upgrade an do the complete system with a high end aftermarket system if you want a significant improvement in sound quality.

...or just hang fire and wait for an OE one to pop up. And they will, eventually.
