D5252T dynamic diesel pump timing.
I'm having a very smoky startup at the moment and suspect my dynamic pump timing on the diesel pump needs adjustment.
It was last adjusted in April 2016 at 197,000 miles at Jump Leads in Lytham when they replaced my OHC timing belt etc. Since then Iv'e done about 13,000 miles. I called in to my nearest Indi in Wigan today to see if they were able to do the dynamic diesel pump adjustments - I haven't used them before even though they are the nearest to me - preferring Jump Leads from recommendations here. They said not, they don't have the equipment for my engine anymore they said, though they do have use of VIDA I believe. Now my D5252T engine is MSA15.8 and VIDA is able to do the dynamic pump timing on that engine as I mentioned to him when he declined. Not on the turbo model he said ????? ( Is there a non turbo D5252 ????? ) But they said they were unable to do the timing. That, to be honest, is all I need to know before taking it to Jump Leads again - if you get my drift. I like to go to Jump Leads in the warmer months though when we can spend time in Lytham while the job is being done. Lytham in the colder months is less attractive. My adjustments are not urgent so I will bide my time for a visit to Jump Leads - my car starts and it runs well once the startup smoke has blown clear. I wonder what the response would have been had I needed a cam belt job locally which also would have needed the dynamic pump timimg. Maybe the fact that I expressed slight interest in a V50 and then a V70 they had in stock influenced the outcome. I have now discounted a V50 though. Colin

The smoke is just a bit darker than battleship grey and soon stops.
No black or white smoke at all. Colin

Have you ever changed the coolant heater plugs? They're often over looked but play a key role in getting the engine upto temp.

They're extra glowplugs that heat the coolant to aid warm up from cold start.
Admittedly, they only come on when it's pretty cold (and only if your alternator will provide sufficient amps along with all other loads) They don't stay on long enough to have much of a noticeable effect on heater temperature, but every little helps on these. I'm pretty sure mine are goosed and it takes a loooooong time for mine to warm up. From what you describe, yours does sound quite normal. This winter has been colder I think, but it wouldn't do any harm to get your timing and IQ checked. Mine smokes quite badly at cold start, but it has done well over 300k on the original pump and injectors, so wouldn't be surprised if they were a little dribbly now. If you get stuck, I'm in south Manchester and could check your timing, etc for you

Timing check OK, but IQ being checked ?? - I always thought I was reasonably intelligent - others will suspect otherwise. IQ - Oh - OK - Injection Quantity. Now I get it - ha ha. I ( erm ) have the equipment to check the IQ and about 12 months ago it was a little off but being that the car was running well and with good economy I didn't want to fiddle in my ignorance of how to correct it. On saying that I obviously also have the equipment to check the dynamic pump timing ( haven't recently, should do but it's cold out and not urgent ) but not confident to correct it with the tapered camshaft/timing pulley joint and no locking tool. Service records for mine don't show change of diesel pump or injectors. As I said mine is MSA15.8. It would be good for me to gain knowledge and confidence in the adjustment of the dynamic pump timing being that I have the equipment. Colin
