Which Petrol engine is best for V70

long story but now I have to look at a large estate for 5 people and luggage...

I like the V70 but for reasons I wont go into I need a petrol one.

I only do about 4k miles a year with once a year trip to cornwall.

Which petrol engine is best for reliability, etc..

My budget is under £2500 so probably could only afford a higher mileage one 80k+

The 2.5T engine has the best pulling power from low rpm (210bhp + 320Nm from 1500rpm) so would suit a fully loaded V70.

It's a bit juicy on fuel but your described mileage is low so worth considering.

All of the petrol engines are equally reliable in honesty. You could argue the 2.4 non turbo has less complexity due to no turbo, but as I say, all engines are reliable 5 pot "volvo modular engine".

what are the turbo models ?

Auto or manual best for reliability etc..

Turbo models (UK) are:

2.0 T - 180bhp
2.4 T - 200bhp
2.5 T - 210hhp
2.3 T5 - 250bhp
2.4 T5 - 260bhp
2.5 R - 300bhp

Non Turbo:

2.4i - 140bhp
2.4i - 170bhp

Manual is best for overall reliability, though the autos aren't too bad if the gearbox oil is changed periodically.

These cars in my opinion better suit an automatic gearbox.

Yup seems good.

Take for test drive, gearbox changes should be smooth, shouldn't bang into gear. It's an earlier model V70 so worth just checking that everything electrical is working as it should.

At 120,000 miles you should budget for a gearbox oil flush and get a reset on the gearbox oil condition status. Essential to keep those gearboxes running well.

Another point worth considering is to check for vibration of the brake pedal under medium-heavy braking.

With autoboxes, a lot of people don't bother putting their handbrake on when sitting at junctions, so if a scenario heavy braking has just occured, e.g exit sliproad with traffic lights at the end, you can warp the front discs just by leaving a foot on the brake pedal at a standstill.

My colleague recently bought an S60 D5 Auto that was like this... Fitted new discs, vibration disappeared and his fuel economy shot up by 4-5MPG overnight.

For 5 people aboard, get the turbo ones: cheaper to buy and on gas is the 2.0T, then 2001-2003 2.4T 2004-up 2.5T need more gas.

I'd look into a 2003 or a 2007-up, with around 80K miles - may cost a bit more, but with little miles/year you may stay free of repairs for a few years.

The 2004-2006 are still good, but some had problems with the CEM which is annoying and costly. Skip the 2001-2002

Go with automatic 5 speed (without manual shifting), manual transmissions have slave cylinder problems that cost a lot (unless it was already done recently). Test the transmission fully warmed up, must be shifting without kicks

I suggest reading and searching on forums, there are already several posts addressing reliability and better years. By the way, an advertising says nothing about the mechanical/electrical condition: all cars on sale are nice and shiny, but some are in good condition while others are a money pit.

Sorry but I'm not a mechanic so some of what members are saying is great but I wouldn't know whether a turbo is good or bad...what the difference between an early or late V70 is ( ie which year ).. or how to tell its a bad'un or not...

It would be great if a member is selling or knows someone who is selling a good one...?

I will only be 5 up 10% of the time, 90% will be 2 or 3 at the most
