Question 440 1994 Automatic Transmission ZF 4 HP 14

Hello every one.

I am new to this forum and have not found any topic about the following.

My 440 1998 cc year 1994 has the automatic transmission ZF4 HP14.

It has worked beautifully until suddenly a visit to the supermarket.
Without any previous hesitation or notice, the reverse gear is dead.
All gears forward are excellent, but no reverse. I guess it is an internal brake that should block the planetary gear in order to make it spin backwards.

The car is in a very good condition and it would be a sad story to have to scrap it.
The price for a new gear box is out of question.
on the internet I have found replacements for around 150 pound, but don' know how much work is involved in the change.
I am used to mechanical car work, but do not have any other place to do it than in the street.

Can anyone give me some ideas what the problem could be.
I have added an anti-slip fluid, but no change. "LUCAS automatic transmission fix"

Hope that someone can give me an advice.

Hi, this is only a suggestion & if you've tried already, then sorry!

Have you tried simply changing the ATF? My bro' had a Mazda 3 series a few years ago with these exact symptoms.

He changed the ATF & that sorted it.

The best additive is Lubegard, it's even recommended by Volvo itself. Works great and extends the autobox life. Other additives I wouldn't recommend.
Those ZF autoboxes aren't that robust, most start acting up above 120kmls.
I only have a (pdf) German manual, here it is. Don't know if it's any use to you?

The ZF box is no more problematic than any others its the drivers that cause the problems they will rev the engines in P or N this will ruin the clutch packs.
As said on other posts These boxes are used in forklift trucks to Jags ,
I have one in my 740GLE and tow a caravan from Cornwall to Scotland , but follow the rules , the bad name came from the American market where they were being destroyed by ignoring the rules when doing the emissions tests and revving over 2000 revs 1800 revs is max for P or N.
Hope this clears up the the often held view.
As for your problem first thing is to change your G/Box fluid.

Would towing a 460 with an auto box fitted have the same effect?? I ask as I will be picking one up next weekend and am asuming that N is the same as a manual box ie. free wheel. Last thing I want to do is nack the auto box!!

Towing is only allowed for short distances, no more then aprox. 10mls, and with a max speed of 30mls if I remember correctly. N is not a freewheel configuration like in a manual box. So or remove the driveshafts or use a trailer for longer distances. Towing a 480 without the engine running makes it steer REALLY heavy, I wouldn't recommend it not even for a short trip.

I know what you mean about the 480 my turbo got towed home on more than one occasion! Trying to get hold of a trailer at the moment so fingers crossed.
