Unhappy camshaft problem on 855T5 and v70t5R....

Hi,

after a 18mounth pause... i started back to rebuild my '93 855T5 i've stopped because when i've tightened the top cover, i wasn't able to turn the 2 camshaft... so i leaved her whith the heart open.....

WELL

Last week i fond a '97 v70 T5-R and begun to rebuild the engine...

no problem until i try to refit the top cover...

and now i have the same problem !!!

precisely, when i say : " i can't even turn the camshaft" i mean :

- I removed the 20 hydraulic lifter to let the camshaft turn freely...
- I slide the 2 seals on every shaft out of the engine...
- I lubricate everywhere the camshaft touches aluminium...
- I put the 2 shafts in their own places...
- I set the top engin cover in place...
- I put every bolt in every hole...
- I start tightening bolts, kindly, by hand...

AND THEN THE 2 CAMSHAFTS are BLOCKED !!!!!

even if i continue tightening ton the required torque....

the only way to turn it is to use a oil filter wrench around the pulley.........

I'm soooooooooo disapointed....

I just called my dealer this morning, then he sent me his "official volvo process"... but he told me they never had problem about this.......

Did somebody had this problem ? and how to fix it ....

thanks a lot !!!

did you line up the crankshaft mark on the crank pulley? this puts the pistons in a "safe" position where they won't collide with the valves ! Also the camshafts have to be refitted in a particular position a special tool is used to align them .

hi, thanks for the answer.

absolutly .................................................. .not.

i have no valve, ni hydraulic lifter, no timing belt installer....

I only installed 2 "free steel bar" between 2 "aluminium blocks"....

i wanted to pu them in place to see if everything is normal, turning freely...... ans it'is NOT....

you see ?

i don't think that the position of a "free" camshaft is important, but i'll try and tell you if it is...

the only diference with the VOLVO process, is that i don't have any specific tool, so i put camshaft on engine head THEN i put the cover... instead of the opposite...

PS: I'm verry sorry for my bad technical english, i'm french.... lol
i'm used in reading english, but writing technical description in english is another story........................

Ahh! you MUST get this camsaft timing 100% correct or you will wreck the engine when you start it .

YES ! i know that !

that's why i say that i just assembled those parts only ! no valve and no hydrolic lifters !

I assembled it to see if the free camshaft can turn freely in is place when no constraint...

as i can't send you a picture....

- The camshaft ON the engin head without lifter turns freely...
- The camshaft ON the upside down head cover turns freely...
- The camshaft BETWEEN the head and top cover bolted together DOESN'T turn...

is that more clear ?:/

yes understand now ...

Have you got the correct camshaft in the correct place and the correct way around , ?
also you need to do up all the cover bolts to get the camshaft bearings pefectly aligned. Are these all the original parts , camshafts , head and cover?

WELL !

I just tried: fitting the 2 Camshafts under the cover, then fitting the cover... on both engines... no result, impossible to turn camshaft !

i'm pretty sad... 2 greats cars, almost 500HP in my backyard, and noway to play with... :/

I replaced all my exhaust valves nearly 2 years ago now and had no idea how to set up the camshaft timing.

I don't remember trying to turn the camshafts by themselves without the timing belt fitted. I set the crank mark to line up with the oil pump housing mark, installed the head cover and camshafts as they should be and after gradually tightening the 40 ish head cover bolts (1 turn at a time on each bolt to avoid distorting the cover), fitted the timing belt and turned the engine over BY HAND with a spanner on the crank pulley. It wasn't easy and took a bit of effort to turn everything but it proves that valves don't touch pistons. Spark plugs should be removed so you don't fight against pressure build up when manually cranking.

Do you have a VVT pulley?
