Does anyone else have this issue?
Hi All,
I have just collected my S60 R Design from the main dealer after a service and a few software updates and I have to say I'm very impressed with the job they've done and the service. However, I did ask them to look at a knocking noise from the rear which 2 other garages haven't managed to diagnose (its definitely there!) I have also tried everything that I can try (removing floor, toolkit and driving with seats down etc.) but nothing makes any difference. Does anyone else have this problem or am I just going mad!? |

If the knocking is over uneven road surfaces or bumps, I would suspect anti roll bar bushes or drop links first. I had this on my X Type estate recently and replaced the bushes with poly bush types rather than rubber and replaced both drop links and it was entirely silent afterwards. The rubbers and links looked and felt ok but the proof was in their replacement.
It is a known issue on X Types but not sure the same applies to V60's??? It is also worth looking at exhaust mountings but if you have had it looked at then I would think the exhaust issue would be spotted.

Hi Windy,
Thanks for the reply,I think the drop links were done the last time it went to my normal garage so it is probably the anti roll bar bushes so will drop it in to get them done I think... don't know what else it could be other than that! |

Clan,
Its the N/S and its had new shock absorbers earlier this year... If it isn't anti roll bar bushes, maybe it's something inside... |

The anti roll bar bushes are available on these , unlike the older volvo bonded bushes which rarely gave trouble . You could look for a stone resting on the rear anti roll bar along its horizontal length , that can make noises , so can stones trapped on the lower seats of the rear springs !

I had exactly this on my XC 60. It was a mishappen tyre.
Took ages to sort as no one could locate it. In the end the tyre company changed the tears and after the took it off you could see it. It did sound like suspension initially. |

Ford 2006 ST220 estate, presumably a basis for a Volvo car of the same era, 90,000 miles, no damper or suspension issues apart from one broken front spring. No battery issues at all, original battery lasted 8 years until I sold it. |

Mk1 XC90 (all Volvo design) remove the treated steel (I.e. they don’t rust) m8 bolts holding the fibreglass tray with sound deadening pads riveted to it - captive nuts are welded to the subframe. Same task on XC60 (FoMoCo base) remove the self tapping screws to release the flimsy cardboard like tray, the screws go in to plastic inserts so if you inadvertently over tighten them they’re about shot.

Comparing apples and oranges.
Remember the 2011 onwards S60 was marketed as the naughty Volvo. It handled like no Volvo before. I suspect there was some input from Ford chassis. People may not like Ford for various reasons but one thing they do very well is tune a chassis.
