Default V70 1999 2.5 TDI Automatic Gearbox Fault

V70 1999 2.5D 193K

Hello

Have a weird problem with a V70 I have recently purchased. The car will start ok but has the gearbox arrow flashing on the dash as well as the engine management light being on. The car will drive but seems to get into 3rd gear and thats that, no overdrive, the car will travel at 60/70 mph but the revs are very high (3500/4500rpm) When I brake on most occassions the car will come to a halt shuddering as though its stuck in 3rd and not coming down through the gears. If you switch the engine off and on again the fault clears until you drive off again (the lights stay on the dash). If you drive the car at low speeds (30/45 mph) it doesn't seem to happen. The car has recently had cambelt, water pump done etc (about £550 worth of work) so has been well looked after engine wise and I have stacks of history.

Could this fault possibly a sensor as I don't think its the gearbox?

Any help would be most appreciated

sounds like a pnp switch possibly.

you could try moving the gear lever fully forward and backwards around 15 - 20 times to try to clean up the tiny contacts and tracks in side the unit (do this with the ignition off).

sometimes this will help, if not you might be looking at doing this;

Hi Mike.
sounds like the typical limp mode.
Go and get your codes read, but I think your going to be a little upset with the outcome.
Hope I'm wrong.
joe.

I had a similar problem on my 850tdi auto and it was under warranty.

It used to go into limp mode and I could resolve temporarily by switching off ignition and on again - lasted from hours to days before fault came again.

It took main dealer many attempts to fix it, but after 4th occasion they diagnosed the Accelerator Pedal Module (Whole accelerator and module combined.)

Once this was replaced I have had no problems since.

This may not be your problem but may help in diagnosis.

Hi .mike

This may not be what you want to read, but I had similar symptoms with mine a few years ago, as seen in this post. It was at 160k at the time and coincidentally I had just had the belts replaced.

Hopefully though it will at least help you to ascertain that it is not the same problem that I had. With any luck it will be the PNP switch.

Mind you, I had the gearbox and torque converter rebuilt and it has driven like a dream since (as you would expect).

As silverback02 said, get the codes read and see where you stand.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Dan

Thank you for your replies. I think I will get it looked at. Can anyone recommend a decent mobile vovlo mechanic in Sussex?

Can the pnp switch also be called the Flywheel Pick Up Sensor as my local main dealer seems to think?

Cheers Chris, I must admit I wasn't that impressed with the main dealer as they didn't know what a pnp switch was!

Did you get them to check for fault codes from the gearbox, if so what was the result?
