Default Tesco Super Unleaded

Hi,

I own a V50 T5 and am considering running the car on Super Unleaded. However the price difference compared to Unleaded puts me off.

1) Does using Super Unleaded help with Fuel Consumption? Currently on the motorway and cruise set to 72mph, the average fuel consumption was 36mpg.

I noticed Tesco does a 99RON Super unleaded priced 2p less then Shell. I did some reading in it and Greenergy (Tesco fuel supplier) say it has 5% bio-ethanol added or something like that.
Point to Ponder: if more than 5% is added, would this harm my engine?

2) With this 5% bioethanol in Tesco Super unleaded, does this mean their fuel reacts better for high compression engines (assuming this T5 engine is one) than "normal" super unleaded like Shell etc?

A tuning company has done tests (rolling Road) with different fuels and they seem to claim Tesco Super Unleaded has proven increase in power figures when compared to other brands. Anyone here read that article and can add more to it? i.e. debunk that test as B*** S***. I am not technically minded with cars so thats why I am asking before trying out Tesco Super Unleaded if I get no negative feedback.

The report can be found on,
http://www.thorneymotorsport.co.uk/g...%3D0%26toc%3D1

Hope I am not asking much or if this topic has been discussed/mentioned elsewhere in this forum, please post link.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome this subject has been brought up before if you do a search then you will see the thread, and yes it does feels different in more power, but my R doesn't want to return around town anymore than 16 mpg on it, back to Shell VP for me,

Gary

Hi gary,

yeah I read most of the posts especially the one on Tesco 99RON. But its all still not conclusive enough. Some blast BP (well most do), some swear by Shell but there are a few that complain about it.

Not many have given feedback about Tesco Super unleaded although someone suggested using it and after 4 tank fills to use REDEX to clean up. Thats my worry. Could tesco who add 5% bioethanol be causing complications?

What I would like is a definitive answer if Tesco Super Unleaded is better than Shell/BP etc or not. Been searching web for it but still haven't got one. The closest is that report by a tuning company.

eric

ps: Thats a very nice looking car you have. VERY SEXY! Colour is excellent.

Where do you think Tesco Super Unleaded comes from?
It will come from the best supplier, based on cost... be it Shell /BP / Total...

Same with all supermarket fuels, I'm not saying it's bad, just that's it's not consistant. It's cheaper usually because the likes of shell/BP also add anti foaming agents/ cleaners etc which arn't usually in the supermarket fuels in as much abundance. The fuel is also usually older than you'd find on the main production forecourts.

I know our local Sainsbury's was using Total - now it's BP.
I also belive nearly all fuel supplied is made up of at least 5% bio fuels - could be wrong though, usually am! lol

Default Fuel Supply

Fuel for each area comes from the nearest refinery.

Thus all brands of fuel in Scotland come from the BP refinery in Grangemouth. All brands of fuel in South Wales come from the Texaco place in Milford Haven.

Each company blends to their recipe, and the supermarkets will be the same. What these recipes are is a trade secret.

So whilst different brands are different in their recipe, the same brand will vary around the country. I noticed this for myself when I drove my old V70 T5 from Nottinghamshire down to London and filled up with a full tank of Optimax. I immediately noticed on pulling out of station that there was not as much power, and mpg didn't turn out to be that great either.

A friend in the oil trade told me that London fuel is based on imported Iranian base stock and that in Notts it is more likely to be North Sea stuff.

Just muddyed the waters haven't I ?!.....

Cheers guy!. Learnt more today. Wish all this info was made available more freely so we the consumers can make a choice in what we buy.

Does this forum promote ONE brand of petrol? The URL I initially posted claims Tesco Super gave them the best bhp gain. I was hoping volvo forum might have done such test that either agree with that report or rubbished it.

Thanks for replying and I suppose I just have to try it out myself if Tesco fuel is as good or cost effective to use long term.
