760 resurection

I'm looking at buying a 1986 760 saloon V6 that has been off the road for 20 years. I'd love to buy it and get it back on the road.

I have never had anything to do with the V6 engines so all of the usual questions.

What to look out for?
Are they a cambelt or chain?
Anything that will probably need doing to the engine before getting it running?

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

The normal advice is to fit a B230FT

That's the B28E then, the slow, noisy, thirsty, odd-firing, camshaft eating variant compared to the newer B280E.

Would have to be a labour of love - better looking for a later B280E powered version.

Yeah it was a bit of an embarrasment for Volvo.

A 20yo red block will probably start, although I'd want to clean out the old oil properly. The V6 probably needed rebuilt when it was parked up.

Could be a curiosity, maybe even rarity value if you can restore it, but be expecting lots of parts difficulty and lots of engine work.

If the car itself is in good shape and the right price, I'd be tempted to put it back together and see how it is. In terms of recommissioning the motor, the same caveats apply as always with an old lump, change all fluids and belts etc, fresh plugs/HT leads and fuel, soak the bores and make sure it's turning over freely, then see what you've got at the key.

Worst case scenario, that process costs you £100/£150 and some enjoyable (if you're like me!) spannering time, and the motor turns out to be crocked, in which case you either rebuild the engine or junk it and put a B230FT or similar in, and live happily ever after.

Personally, if I had the time and money, I would LOVE a project like this.
