There was an assortment of drive lines that came under Amazons. What year is your car? Which style of carrier does yours have now? What size is the m41's flange?

Chris
the car is a 133 2dr 1970 4 speed the prop has a centre bearing in a rubber housing with flanges at either end and a splined section in the middle
61423]i want to fit this over drive (hopefully)overdrive.jpgoverdrive id plate.jpgdidnt think it would end up being this compicated a volvo amazon should be a volvo amazon but it seems that every part on these could have a million different variables to em i'm starting to get sick of it ..anyway...the flange measures 8cm across outside to outside with a bolt pattern of 5cm from the middle of one bolt to the middle of its neighbour. all help greatfully recieved

If Volvo had been fitting overdrives to 1970 Amazons they would have been using the J type OD the same as they were fitting to B20 140 models. Transition from D to J OD's came with the change from B18 to B20. You have a D type. That is not a problem but you're more likely to have a flange mismatch. Mismatch will likely be with the number of splines rather than bolt pattern but as you say there are several different types. Did this box/OD come with a flange on it? Will it mate up with the one on you cars prop? In the conversion you can lose the flywheel disk. You will need the correct crossmember or you can modify your own. Your existing front shaft can be cut down and if necessary an early one can donate the front yoke and matching flange for the matching flange on the this OD or you can obtain and shorten a late B18 one.

Best to move this thread to technical I think.

He won't have flange mismatch. All D type overdrives either use a small flat flange or they used the early cup type flange that holds the cup with 2 U bolts.

There is no such thing as a big flange prop intended for an Amazon. All he needs is asmall flange OD prop with a late centre bearing and it'll work. The D type is a smidgin shorter than a J type but that isn't an issue, the sliding yoke will compensate. Ergo his existing prop cut down will work.

Going the other way, fitting a J type overdrive to any age of 120, can cause issues because the props can be a bit long and lock on the slider and because of flange size problems.

He does not need a crossmember; 120 series crossmembers for OD and non overdrive boxes are identical. They're not on a 140 but they are on a 120.

No M40 flange will fit an M41, regardless of age or type of overdrive.

No D type OD flange will fit a J type or vise versa regardless of age, size or origin.

yes the flanges on the over drive match up with the flanges i have on the existing prop on the car not sure about the splines but really need a appropriate overdrive propshaft hence in the wanted section rather than tech

I have a short driveline section with the later carrier and small (~85mm) flange. But I'm across the pond. If you can't do it over there I can mail it over...

I can post photos if it would help.

sounds great how much do you need for the prop and postage?
obviously if anyone else has one nearer it would be better (cheaper import tax etc) but if needs must ..i'd rather have an original part than a shorter shaft cobbled together by the local engineer

Why, take it to a propshaft specialist. The last one I had done cost £150, and that included new yokes, balancing and all new UJs.

I'd want $70 for the driveline. it needs a new bearing and carrier rubber. And airmail shipping would $62 for priority (7-10 days) or $66 for express (3-5 days).

You may or may not need to get the whole assembly balanced after my half is mated with yours.

Thus it may or not be worthwhile for me to send you this one.

Let me know your thoughts.
