V90XC, 2017, power tailgate not operating

Tailgate still operates, but mostly manually. When opening, the tailgate opens a few cms, then stops. When fully open (manually), it closes a few cms with each button push - takes about 10 presses of the tailgate button. Given that the electrics/electronics still work, albeit in stages, I'm guessing that the fault lies in a sensor or sensors. When I open/close the tailgate manually, the struts make a whirring noise - I'm assuming electric struts instead of hydraulic ones. Any ideas?

The first thing I would try is re-setting the tailgate height to see if it sorts the problem. Open tailgate to full open then press and hold the close button.

I've tried the reset numerous times (fully open, press the button for at least 3 seconds) - no success. BTW, I can't hear a beep which I believe is supposed to sound after the 3 second press of the button.
