Smile XC 60 Emissions warning back on again

Emissions light came on on my 2014 XC60 D4 (130k) about 3 weeks ago. Local garage read and cleared the code (£30 plus the VAT) and said might be due to car not being used so much during lockdown, which seemed reasonable. The advise was if it came back on then it would need to come in to strip and clean the EGR , but that with more normal use this might not be necessary.

Sure enough, A week later the light is back on so it went in for "remove EGR valve and clean, clean pipe from intake manifold to EGR, Use ultrasonic tank" (another £115+) which i didn't mind as I was told this would be a possibility.

Problem is now that the light is back on less than a week later. What could it be and what can I expect from my garage since I've already paid for the issue to be fixed? If the garage have used the diagnostic to ID the problem is it unreasonable to expect them to fix it first time, or could there be more than one fault?

I'm not well versed in mechanics or these forums so hopefully I'm in the right place for some constructive pointers. Thanks in advance.

Which engine is this? If it's the VEA D4 then maybe it's the EGR cooler becoming blocked? At least until recently this was a free repair at Volvo.

Can you tell us the stored code that was read?

Unless they properly understand Volvo issues then it'd be easy for them to jump to wrong conclusions.

Hi Thanks for the pointer. Its the D4 181 BHP R-Design Lux Auto, so assume the same as VEA D4? I don't know the code I'm afraid. I will see what the crack is at Volvo but i might be out with them as had it serviced locally rather than at dealers since i bought it last year. Failing that I will discuss with my local garage and see what they think - they have been pretty good with me so far on services so sure we can sort it out.

The AWD versions kept the older 5-cylinder engine. VEA on FWD.

To be honest I'm not entirely convinced by this. The light is now off but I'd not be surprised if it reappears at some point very soon.

It also happened to me. Don't worry. Your car is fine. Believe me. 😎😉

Update:

So after a longer run the emissions wring light went off but as the vehicle was booked in for recall on seatbelts the dealer had a look and said it might need new EGR cooler at £900. I decided to leave it since the light had cleared, but the light has since come back on again. I'm beginning to think that i'm going to have to cough up but was wondering if any other options worth trying. I guess a diesel additive won't be any use if its a cooler issue? presumably i need to deal with it otherwise something worse might happen? Thanks,

I have no idea if that could be the case but i had emission warning light in my last car Vauxhall Astra. I sort it out by long run on motorway with revs over 3k for over 30 minutes. Vauxhall service told me that dpf is blocked of but apparently after this 30min all come back to normal.

Have a look at my problems, now resolved

Did the fault code indicate that the EGR was blocked and required cleaning or replacing. The P04D9 fault code only inicates that there is insufficient exhaust flow through the EGR. It could be a blocked cooler or a jammed EGR valve or a blockage somewhere else in the EGR pipework. You really need sensible analysis of the fault before randomly having expensive components replaced.
