Pulley bearings are completely shot. It wobbles and snarls even with air con clutch disengaged..

Dunno what I would do in that situation.

Either a second hand unit or maybe replace the pulley.

Don't think I could live without air con (although I probably use it more in the winter for demisting), in these heat waves (30C the other day in Somerset!) its a life saver.

I had your problem just two weeks ago, my aircon pulley bearings destroyed themselves.

£110 all in for compressor, new belt and aircon service from Halfords. I replaced the compressor and belt myself with a little help.

If your system was working and cooling properly before hand it could be worth a shot if you're willing to pay that much.

Where the hoses meet the compressor I removed that connection and lost all refrigerant. Removed the old auxiliary belt and then removed the compressor. The clutch was wonky and 2/3 of the bearings were now just filings. If your clutch looks okay you could consider getting the pulley bearing replaced professionally somewhere? My wonky clutch put me off that option.

If you replace the compressor the clutch will not engage if you try to test it because it needs pressure to activate.

If like me you source your replacement part from a car in a scrap yard look over the whole car to see if it's been maintained. The one I got it from was full of mayonnaise but very clean mechanically otherwise. The pulley span quietly and smoothly and the clutch rotated too meaning the compressor rotated too. £40 for my compressor. £10ish for belt from local motor factors. £59.99 for aircon clean service and re-gas from Halfords.

Two weeks in and no trouble. If any further questions ask and I will reply as soon as I notice. HTH, Adrian.

do you remember what size replacement belt you needed? I found an 'ish compressor for about £35.

I gave my local motor factors my reg and they asked if it had aircon or not so they knew the two belt lengths so I'm unsure, sorry!
