Default S60 R Suspension Problems

Hi all, this is my first post on the board so treat me as the 'naive newbie' for now ;-)
I have owned a manual S60 R since September and have covered approx 3000 miles. I have noticed since pretty early on that the rear suspension just does not seem right - when driving over bumpy surfaces, the car has a trend to 'jump' to the left or right as if their is a problem with the set-up (this occurs in comfort, sport and advanced modes).
The local dealership have replaced one of the rear shock absorbers which improved things - but the issue is still there.
I am in the process of getting it booked in again for further checks - hust wondered if anybody has seen / heard of similar or whether it is just down to my usual bad luck with cars.

I moved from an S2000 to the S60R so am very used to sports suspension and handling - this car just does not seem right.

Ask them to check the rear wheel toe-in while you are there. Being Front wheel drive the rear wheels have to be tracked as well as the front. They should have replaced BOTH shock absorbers as they should be replaced as a matched pair. Have you asked them to check the electronic suspension control (may need updating from Swedish Volvo mainframe).

All the best, Peter

This sounds to me to be a bent suspension component that is causing the front or rear to track differently on compression or rebound. Has your dealer checked that everything is true, and can you discern if its the front or rear that is causing this?

Just an update here - Volvo are still looking into this but tell me there are 'no known' defects with the suspension on the S60R. Quite frankly I dont believe this - an obvious knocking noise from the rear left whel arch and this lurching from left to right on bumpy surfaces is just not right.

They are taking it back in shortly to re-check the wheel alignment - I am not convined this will help anything

Are there any S60R owners out there - are you having any ride issues like the above, or is it just me ;-(

Also - does nyone know of a site or have acces sto any Volvo technical bulletins that may expand on this issue ?

Thanks,

Paul

I've read this before!! Some guy in the US was complaining of exactly this, the car jumping. Think he had a new V70R though.

Try

Must be buried somewhere on one of these sites.

Might be worth posting across all of the above sites.

Good luck!!

I would ask Volvo to let you drive another S60R so you can compare..

If it does feel different then their is an obvious problem.

Kind Regards,

Neil

Thanks Andy, some excellent stuff here I can go and beat the dealer with - looks like there is a known problem here that my dealer is either not aware of or is just playing dumb for some reason.

Well, they cant play dumb any more now........

Hi.

With a car that new and with that few miles on, I wouldn't accept any excuses at all.

Try another one and see. If there is an obvious knocking, then they should have no problems in hearing it. I would have thought you would be entitled to a replacement car as a goodwill gesture. I don't know why but the longer a dealer procrastinates and hides behind "we can find no problems" the less satisfied the customer becomes.
If they just replaced the car and you were satisfied then they could set about fixing (or otherwise) the faulty car at their leisure and you wouldn't be on here asking for advice and you would think more of the dealer and be prepared to offer some loyalty as a reward for the good service they would have shown by replacing the car.
Oh hum.

They just don't seem to get it do they? Excuses does NOT amount to customer service.

Dan.

Hi Dan, good points you make here and I fully agree with them. I have now reached the point where I have already written a letter to the dealer expressing the views on this situation being unnacceptable and that we are now really at last chance saloon. The comical part of this is they took their demonstrator out and said it exhibited worse characteristics then mine (thinking that would make me think mine was better and therefore OK!!!)

I have told the dealership that either they or Volvo themselves put their hands up and admit a problem here - at the moment the dealership are laughingly calling this a 'characteritic' of the car, not a problem.

The saga continues.....

this is the problem with dealers i have and it is not helping when the next car i wanter was a s60r but i have heard such bad things about it that i'm now thinking of something else!!!

every volvo dealer i have been to has been s**t, when thay can't find the problem they say its NORMAL and tell you not to worry but its not them that has spent there hard earned on one of THERE cars. i think they USED to make great cars but the after sales support just isn't there ;(
