Wiper arms
I need to remove my wiper arms which should be a straight forward job. Remove the nuts and tap the arms with a plastic mallet, and off they come.
BUT 10 yrs of never been removed, have "welded" them solid. So much so that even a special puller I made using two pices of 5mm steel plate and 8mm bolts have failed to move them.- I was anxious about breaking the arms,so did not tighten really hard. I have soaked WD40, tried a shock them by hitting with a hammer - but they wont shift. Anyone go any "tips/tricks" ? I don't want to get my gas gun out, but thats looking like my next option. Wind up the pullers , hot water and let nature do the rest. Don't let it near the glass. WD40 is overrated , the other stuff , Ezioff or something like that is much better at releasing corroded fasteners. Puller has to be really straight or it just makes things worse.

Rust buster
Hello, Brenden W's comment about WD-40 is so true. I guess people just want to believe in something. I read a ton of posts on "rust blasters" and the consensus was that a 50/50 mixture of acetone and transmission fluid is tops in the home-made department. Even a drop of transmission fluid alone seems to creep into frozen joints. I keep my supply of 50/50 in an old contact lens solution bottle. The precise little squirter is very useful. I hit every involved fastener I can reach before a job. It seems to work well. If anyone ever sees an old can of TASGONE in their travels, grab it. You can hear the rust fizz away as it works. That stuff's gotta be illegal. Kira

Over night soak with WD 40 and being a little bit more adventerous with tightening the bolts then tapping the top plate when the plates were tightened together got the job done.
Thanks to all for their advice. Will clean up surfaces which are badly corroded before reassembly. Cheers Bob |
