Default Noise When Cold

I have a 1997 V40 2.0 Auto. The last 2 years have been fine, but 3 months
ago I started to hear a whine when starting from cold. It stops completely
and abruptly after driving for just 1 mile. The noise is coming from
directly under the fuse box from what looks like a plastic housing. If you
switch the engine off soon after starting the noise slowly runs down like a
fan with a noisy bearing. My problem is that I can't find any reference to
this plastic housing in my workshop manual. Nor is it shown on the wiring
diagram. As the noise is getting louder each day any help will be greatly
appreciated.

Default RE: Noise When Cold

I have now resolved the noise. It was the air pump. This item is completely sealed so as in my case a dry bearing has cost me £362, and that is a supply only price.x(
