xc60 noise 5th 6th gear

2014 xc60 d4 awd manual. my car has started making a whirring rumbling noise in 5th + 6th gear i think i can hear the noise slightly in 2nd ,the noise stops if clutch is pressed. some one else posted about same problem last year but no outcome was posted thanks keith.

Is the noise present when idle also? Or just when driving?

noise is just present when driving ,disappears when clutch is pressed when moving, no noise at all in 1st 3rd and 4th gears .car has done 80000 miles

That doesn’t sound great for the gearbox I’m afraid. The fact it does it in specific gears and only when driving sort of rules out thrust bearing and they are not fitted with a pilot bearing as far as I’m aware. I would be tempted to drop the gearbox oil and check for any signs of metal. The M66 gearbox is usually a strong solid unit and failure isn’t common. Be worth getting a professional opinion.
