Doesn't sound worth taking the risk to leave it in just primer though, especially as it will be out of sight.... Btw, did you get my PM from Friday? Hadn't heard back, so thought I should double check!

Hi Paul, yes, I think I agree with you about it sitting in even a waterproof primer and will give it a cursory coat of colour as well just to help keep moistur at bay. The rest of the car can wait.
Saturday is fine if you can make it in the morning as then I'll be able to give you my child-free undivided attention! Please confirm you are definately coming and roughly a time. Gordon |

A little more progress today.
Here's a before and after of the chassis section under the spare wheel well. I cut it out from the car still attached to the floor section of the wheel well. The floor section then acted as a jig to stop the heat from warping it when I gas welded in a new top section to it. Then I just cut it away and hey presto. I've shot blasted it and have treated the inside of the chassis that joins to this section with some of rustbusters fe 123 molecular rust converter... 004.jpg 026.jpg I'm planning to spend the whole day on the car tomorrow. Excellent - I'll aim to be there by about 10:30 / 11 o'clock. Are you still at the same address? Cheers, Paul

Today has been quite a productive day.
I have finished the spare wheel well repairs and it all just needs some primer. The photos of it were a bit dark and dingy as the car is back on the scissor lift at the moment and they are taken underside up without good light, so I'll get some better ones of that in due course when it's back on the roller. The front end is really starting to come together. There was a very dark moment today when I couldn't get the front end to line up at all and the passenger side wing was sitting a good 11 - 12mm higher than the drivers side! I was having thoughts about ringing the scrap guy when I remembered I hadn't re-tightened the front crossmember bolt on the passenger side. Tightening it up was like waving a magic wand and I watched with sheer joy as it pulled the passengers side back in line by about 8mm. I've since traced the remaining 3mm to a mis-shapen passenger side wing (you can even see this in the first photo). Having taking a profile of it with a profile gauge shows that it is 3mm higher than the drivers side. Great news. I'm so glad I've found the solution for the extra 3mm difference! To rectify this, I'm going to release the spot welds on the headlight retaining ring and re-set the curvature on the top of the wing just as Volvo intended with a bit of hammer and dolly work. Here are some pictures of the front end showing the radiator panels coming into shape after heating with the acetylene kit and some clamping / hammer & dolly work. Panel gaps are satisfactory now after A LOT of faffing about... 001.jpg 006.jpg 005.jpg 004.jpg I'm hoping to get a bit more done on Saturday morning. Thanks for all your encouragement and support. Looking good Gordon. Seeing the front like that makes me think gunmetal grey would probably look good.

Awesome welding skills at work here!
I have an Austin Maxi in similar condition festering in my garage. This thread is giving me all sorts of ideas.

Thanks Mitch,
It would look great, though there'd be a lot more prep work on the body as darker colours tend to pick up every bulge and hollow. I wanted an Amazon in white to make up a matching pair with my P1800 so this ones going to stay. Must admit, I'd love a black 1800 though... |

Thanks Tim,
I'm just been looking back through the photos, reminding myself from where I've come on this corner. Trying to motivate myself to keep getting stuck in. Before Original.jpg After... 004.jpg |
