Smile S60R reliability

Well it's coming up to 3 years with the S60R and it is probably the best car I have owned in many ways. The only repairs have been the new bevel gears reported on this thread (£387) and the poxy alarm siren that I fitted myself. The one to buy is the kit (9499758 / £89 ish) as it is cheaper and comes with the rivets. I think these cars are stupidly cheap for what they can do compared to any other make.

well i have had my R for 2 months now and it has been back to my local dealer twice, once for new steering stops and the second time for the 4wd not working it turned out to be a pressure sensor in the rear diff. Then while we were on hoilday after not using the car for a day, just after start up it goes into limp home mode. Limped over to dealer in maldon north yorkshire they were fantastic. We turned up after first calling them they took the car straight in read the codes and fitted a new set of spark plugs a check over and roadtest all within an hour and half, all while we sat upstairs with free tea and coffee, comfy chairs, newspapers and tv and kids has colouring books and lego puts my local dealer to shame as they had promised me the car would have had new plugs fitted as part of the work they did to the car before i bought it. At the moment the car is perfect plus it already had a rica remap done by the previous owner. It is under warranty for a year so we will see what happens but i do love it it makes me smile everytime i look at it.

Another 16 months and I'm starting to see a few things at 78k miles. Had the angle gear collar replaced (750 quid) as it was starting to slip. Poxy alarm is starting to go off (common on several Volvo models I understand). Need two new tyres at the front, but the rears are fine with plenty of tread.
Dealer advised one of the front shocks was 'getting worn' so I got x2 Monroes for the 4C system from ebay at 330 quid and will fit them when I get the chance (much better than the 450 quid EACH that a dealer will charge!).

I honestly don't think they are that much more expensive to run than most other cars, and I say this after 3 years of ownership.

resurrecting a slightly old thread! thought I would ask here before I start my own.

I have been looking for an S60R on and off for a while now, mostly due to the fact I keep hearing bad things about reliability and getting put off then get tempted again.

Just wondered if any of you know of a good after market warranty for S60R? There seems to be a real mix of items covered depending on which provider you go with so thought it might be worth asking for someone with specific experience.

Would have the car in a flash but there does seem to be a worryingly high amount of reliability complaints.

They are not money pits as mentioned in this tread by a number of people, just some people don't realise when a suspension strut goes (as all cars will at some point) they are going to be a likklt more because of the 4c system, but also as mentioned, they are a hell of a car for what you get with the competition!!

Majority love them! Those who don't are jelous!

I love my R and I wish they would make a new model out of the current S60 / V60.

hi im looking to buy a s60r but like many im really worried about the horror stories, are these high bills only due to garage billls ie: shoving the car to a specialist everytime the car goes over a pot hole etc?
my last volvo was a v40 t4 which was superb and my current car is a e39 bmw 530i m sport- with both cars i could've spent a fortune but since i service them myself and can do most repairs myself i've saved a packet- so does this apply to the s60r?
by the way the car im looking at is a 2003 geartronic- any advice?

I recently bought an 03 manual S60 R and it has been a 1st class experience so far. Mine has done 90k miles but came with a substantial file with all the service history and repairs. The car is far more refined than my other R's I did think about a few other options before buying the S60 like a M5 and a Jag but the overall running costs were to high compared to the S60.

As long as you buy a car with a full documented history you should be ok but do remember these are a bit performance orientated cars and therfore do cost a bit more to run

I have had my S60 R for 10 months now. The more i drive it the more it amazes me. Just one thing in my experience I would leave it standard as mine now is, as the rica remap was causing issues with the engine and gearbox. MRG in chippenham have sorted it now.

Jesus, I never knew they were so troublesome. Neighbour of mine has a 04 V70 R with about 120k and never missed a beat. He drove the car up to 80k and then his wife took over the car.

I think that any car maker can get things wrong, make a dog/Friday evening car. My wifes S4 cab with 21k had been back to Audi 104 times with 69 different problems before Audi decided to just give her a new car. The new one now has 39k and never missed a beat even though it has been around most tracks in the UK and the Ring about 100 times. The only thing that we've had to change are the brakes, now 8 pot, lines and a set of 19" BBS LM's to fit over the brakes.

In saying that the only car that I've ever had and never had even one thing go wrong with was one of my V70 R's a 2.4 2000 car. The only time it was in the garage for was service.
