T4 in outstanding form at Crail
Hi peeps.
Jacq will no doubt add to this when she get's a chance but just thought the tale of the T4 raising eyebrows right off the top of peoples heads at Crail today was worth telling. As Jacq had told previously the car was on the rollers, bit too much boost due to guage error, but after sorting out the boost level and stopping it retarding the timing for detonation reasons, off we went to Crail today in it to see how much faster it was running with the boost increased a bit. By the end of the day the T4 had put in a stonking show, beaten Subaru's, an S2000 (which even while runnin a poor 14.7 with a bad start, the T4 took a car and a bit off of in 350metres to win the race). It was the 2nd fastest fwd car at the strip today, a friends FTO with turbo conversion, aftermarket ECU etc beat us by 0.06 seconds. Apart from the FTO Turbo, there was a tuned mr2 Turbo running 13.7, and a tuned WRX Subaru doing 13.5, all with more mods than the T4, there were another 3 cars faster, One was the infamous 700 BHP drag MR2 turbo (10.9 seconds) Subaru with LOADS of mods doing 10.5 1/4's, and a stripped out 300 BHP Pulsar), all purpose built drag cars, although barring the mr2, still road legal. So not a bad showing for a T4 with some sort of mild ECU remap, a boost controller and a cone filter. The time the T4 managed in the end was 14.37 @ 99.1 mph with a 2.31 60ft It made it over 100 on some runs, putting the 0-100 at approx 14.4 seconds give or take a few hundreths, thats over a second faster than an Escort Cosworth, which has 4wd to help it. 60 ft, even with TC off, and using an MBC with harsh boost build, was 2.31 seconds, who says you cant make a Volvo do a good standing start, just takes practice and a light right foot ;) Anyway, I was hugely impressed today, as were a notable numper of spectators, just thought there might be interested parties. Ross

I've got to hurry up and get away to church just now, but thought it was important to mention that ross achieved the 14.3 in the volvo, whilst i stood and watched. i am so chuffed with it to say the least :)

RE: T4 in outstanding form at Crail
This is true, but it's not like I was driving it all day, we shared the running, jacq managed 14.6 @ 100mph, her own personal best in the car, yes a higher terminal than my 14.3, but it would take too long to explain the ins and outs of TV's versus overall times etc it doesnt always make sense at first glance. The car is trickier to launch with the extra boost and the way the MBC brings it in, much harsher spool up. I've had a lot more practice at that sort of stuff with my own car, and the fact I've been doing it longer than Jacq has, with some more practice she will achieve the same, and better, times. Ross

A blindingly good day out by the sound of it, I wish I'd been there to see some of the faces in the crowd though. Does it still look relatively like a stock motor?

RE: T4 in outstanding form at Crail
Its a standard Phase 2 T4 looks wise, only difference is that it has a crome and silver mesh grill as opposed the standard item, so yes it looks like a stock Volvo S40.
On the run i did the 14.3 on Jacq was spectating to watch the time come up on the board and see what I got, guy in the Clio 182 SPort (182 bhp) tried to edge in front of me as Jacq closed the bonnet because he wanted to race the CRX, presumably as it wasnt worth racing the Volvo, this happens a lot ;) Anyway, i wasn't having it, wasn't pleased at it, and let him do his run up to the line and stage in, then I set off from the pre-stage to theline at full throttle and dumped the clutch, loads of wheelspin, lots of chirping and fluttering from the T4 (Forge dump valve and cone filter means it doesnt sound stock) in order to heat the tyres up a tad for more grip. Someone commented on the noise in the crowd as Jacq walked past and heard a guy say to his m8, yeah, but its F***in fast though. I assume his m8 had commented on why a lowly volvo was making all that fuss lol anyway, off we went, 1st, wheels slipping and squeeling, ease the throttle a bit on and off to keep a good amount of power actually propelling the car rather than just spinning the wheels up, not letting off enough to let the wheels grip too early (can bog it down), short shift to 2nd, revs sit at 5500rpm as the wheelspeed matches to road speed, 5700rpm and into 3rd, blast away, into 4th at 5700rpm and through the line at an indicated 102 (real 99) , Clio was about 60-70 metres down by this point, and not underestimating the Volvo anymore. As you say some folk's faces are priceless, it's been a few times now though and some folk remember it, but it can still pull off being an exceptionally good "sleeper" Ross PS- Prior to the boost controller and cone filter the car did 14.71 (Jacqs best time), and I had managed a best of 14.8 in it, so, £40 for MBC, £90 for cone and cold air box, gained almost half a second, over 400metres, thats a good performance hike, and definate value for money.

Where is Crail, and is it less busy than Santa Pod?

RE: T4 in outstanding form at Crail
Here's the link to my times from yesterday.
Last one is the best one, think they must just be putting all the times up just now as some of the details are iffy, ie it wont show both breakdowns properly for left and right lane, and it says Ross raced a 106 in the last run, when it was a Clio 182, it might sort itself out later in the day. Adam- As you can see from Tony's multimap, it's a fair drive from England, but yes it is quieter than Santa pod, especially on a day like yesterday with no magazines in attendence, just a normal crail thrash, we were there from 10/10:30am and stopped running about 2 o'clock, having done 14 runs, and stopped for cooling the car down every 4 runs. |

It's worth a trip for serious testing - you'll be lucky to get 3 runs at Santa Pod!!!

RE: T4 in outstanding form at Crail
lol going to crail is a long journey for us and we live in scotland :)
i've been to quite a few crail thrashes and this was definitely the quietest day ever, there were prob only about 100 cars if that. on magazine days it's terrible, if you're not there first thing in the morning you have to queue for ages to get a run in, and the cars don't run their best anyway as they're sitting baking. we got to witness a couple of new personal bests for people we know that day, jav with his 700bhp mr2 got a 10.9secs...which he's well chuffed with as this is the car now running the times it did in japan. and a guy called andy forest, who did well at TOTB (Ten of The Best) in york this year got a new best time for himself of 10.5secs in his scooby. it was a great day. what i hope to achieve now is get to get rid of the standard cat in the volvo and go back and do a 14 dead before the end of the year ;). hopefully it will be cold and the wind will be blowing the right way lol. jacqueline. |
