Automatic Transmission Fluid Check V70 T

I'm trying to check the automatic transmission fluid level in a new to me 2006 V70 2.5T. The owner's manual does not appear to contain instructions on how to do this.

Should the engine be running with the car in park when checking the transmission fluid level?

I'd be grateful for advice. Thanks

In a word.... Yes

Also needs to be either hot or cold, so first thing in the morning or after a decent run.

A while back I'm sure I read the procedure, somewhere, but can't put my finger on it.

It's best done with some driving time and using the hot side of the scale, as I believe it's more consistent.

Procedure involved driving for about 20 minutes, stopped, parked on a level surface, handbrake on, move the selector through all positions, pausing for about 5 seconds (truth be told, don't see some of the point in that... once you're in drive, what's the point shifting to 4, 3 and L, it's not going to change anything once stationary) in each position, then back to park, waiting for a period (small nunber of minutes) then checking the level on the dipstick (engine running).

Engine at idle, transmission in P, car on horizontal surface, try measure the first time you pull the dipstick. You'll need a flash lamp & you'll burn your hand if the engine is hot

. Look for thick fluid on the dipstick

Cold engine, with outside temp around 15C, level at cold mark.
Engine fully warmed up, level at hot mark.
200ml between these marks.

Never measure it with the engine off, or you'll be shocked

I've always heard that after going through the detents and landing in P you should get out to the dipstick in 20-30 seconds.
It sounds manic but pop the bonnet before you go through the gears and by all means rehearse.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Perhaps I missed it, but I did not find instructions in my owners manual on how to correctly check the fluid level.

On a 2006 you will almost certainly have a 6 speed auto in which case there is no dipstick.

There is certainly a procedure for checking the 6 speed but as I am not familiar with this box I cannot help you further.

A search will no doubt reveal the procedure.
