Just looking at the responses above, my issue is not related to having the parking brake on or not - the problem is within the gearbox. The car jumps forward violently when drive is engaged - if the footbrake is held or the parking brake is on it just makes a loud bang. I suspect it is better to have no brake on at all as at least it allows the force to dissipate.

I'm interested to hear from other owners who've had the same issue and how it was sorted.

I think the first port of call is to take it to an inpendant volvo specialist as a main dealer will just want to fit a new gearbox

I agree with Cookci. My dealer also wouldn't entertain an ATF change (despite excellent information from here to the contrary).

3 month after the adaptation reset, mine has started doing it again at random (but always when hot). There's no way I'm paying for a replacement autobox when it has only done 30k miles! So it will have to be an Indi to do the ATF flush or do it myself...

I feel your pain...

Would go to another dealer.

New update - box is out of car and being looked at by a specialist. Clutches for first and second have excessive end float so are being replaced (car has done just over 50k!) A new seal kit is also being installed. I'm hoping that and the new fluid will sort the problem as we now need to sell the car as it's replacement has arrived!

Did this sort the issue out?

How much did it cost in the end if you don't mind me asking?

Mine's still intermittently playing up (along with occasional harsh downshifts from 4th to 3rd).

Picking it up tomorrow morning. Hope to find out then!

Peter Lee, any update?

I have same problem, year ago it all started, harsh selection of D and harsh downshifts 4th to 3rd. Oli was changed and also new adaption was carried out. For a while, it was OK, but now it is not OK, same fault.

It's fixed - it's had a lot of work done but all is back to normal. It's had a new valve body, a new C1 clutch (think that's the term), some other new internal components and had the adaptions reset at all temperature ranges i.e. from cold through to full operating temperature. Think the temperature issue is important.

I've got a sneaking suspicion that new fluid and adaptions reset throughout the temperature range might have fixed it but to be honest I'm just pleased it's working.
