XC90 D5 continuous chimes while driving
My lads XC90, 2009, chimes 5 times on starting then goes quiet, but as soon as it reaches about 5mph it starts chiming continuously, and when getting above about 10mps the chimes get faster.
I can't find any mention of this in the manual or via Google. I'm thinking it might be something to do with the traction control as the discs do seem to get quite hot. This model doesn't have a switch to turn the TC off, although the anti-spin can be disabled - this makes no difference. Any advice appreciated. |

Agree with Dave. Is the srs and airbag light on?
Do you have anything like a box on a passenger seat? it does not take much for the car to think someone is sitting there. You will also find the radio has dropped its volume too. John l |

That's possible, it has just had new brake pads fitted and handbrake work done at a garage, it was allegedly checked by a Volvo workshop. The car is new to us, the work was done before we had it delivered and the error was there as soon as we drove it.
We have the "distance selling" option of simply returning the car, but it's really nice and we'd prefer to keep it, as long as this error doesn't point to something expensive in the future. Is there a way of confirming that the parking brake circuit is causing the error ? We are definitely not driving with the brake on, so I assume it's a switch / sensor somewhere. |

Sounds like the seatbelt warning, possible the clasp has a failed switch making it think the belts not fastened, or the passenger seat weight switch is activated. Fasten the passenger seatbelt, even if no one in the seat and see if that shuts it up.

Would agree about the seatbelt warning, but I'm sure it stops above 15MPH.... my guess is the handbrake sensor/switch .... whatever, it really needs checked out.

Firstly, thanks to you all for such speedy and helpful replies, this forum is a gem.
There are no warning lights on in the XC90, the seatbelt and open door warnings all work properly. Just the chime, with no clue as to what it means. The parking brake disengages with a loud clunk and the pedal appears to come all the way up, the car rolls easily, but I'll have a look around it in case there is an obvious wire hanging down. I've started reading the 200 page owners manual, can't find any reference to the chimes that get faster as speed increases. This car is the base model "Active", so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Once again, thanks. Zorbit |

You may have a faulty seat occupancy sensor.
Try putting all the seat belt clips into their respective sockets and see if it stops. If it does, unplug them one by one until the noise comes back. I don't know how many of the seats have occupancy sensors built in (my S60 only has one in the driver's seat). I've only just acquired a xc90 so don't know all it's quirks and foibles yet! |

Could also be a heavy bag on the front passenger seat....
