Default XC70 AWD test

Hi,

About to purchase a 2004 2.5 petrol XC70, 100k mls.

Would welcome some links on how to test the AWD. Would also welcome any suggestions on extra work, in addition to the scheduled servicing, that will keep it running for another 70k mls.

Thanks,

Ive extracted some info from vida, ive included procedures for the T2 and T7 as none stated.
Im sure there will be more suggestions from members who know a bit more than me. Hope it helps anyway.

Thanks,
to keep it simple find some grass/field or loose sand /pebbles on the road and get someone to watch from outside as you accelerate away with full power , the front wheels shouldnt spin and they should see the car pull away cleanly possibly with one or more wheels jerking as the traction is controlled .
or get underneath and the propshaft should be directly connected to the front wheels , if you can turn the propshaft by hand without the front wheels rotating there is a problem with angle gear bolted to the gearbox .

Pretty much what Clan said

Find some gravel/wet grass, turn off the traction control, give it full throttle from standstill. The car should pull away cleanly with little or no wheelspin or torque steer.
If either of those happen then there's some sort of problem.

It wouldn't hurt to get the codes read before buying either....

It might also be worthy of examining around the angle gear housing, failure of these units is more likely to be as a result of lost oils than physical failure. The splined collars of the drive output being the weak point in that set up.

Changing the oil I believe is not a service item so if the unit leaks normal service would not necessarily refil/repair.

Cheers

Bob

Angle gear oil leaks are not at all common , however i have seen several destroyed by oil loss , they only hold one litre of oil which can rapidly disappear with a small oil leak , however checking the angle gear for leaks IS part of the volvo regular service .

Thanks to everyone who has offered advice, will post updates as things progress.

One of the first things I will be checking are the handbrake linings for disintegration.
