V40: How to change bulbs behind Speedometer on a 2001 V40

Hi

I've searched on here but can't seem to find an answer. The only ones I seem to find are for the heater control switches.

Does anyone have any links to an "Idiot proof" guide on how to change a bulb behind the speedometer?

Any help would be most appreciated.

You obviously need to remove the speedo. If you have a 3-spoke steering wheel, you can follow the following instructions. If you have a 4 spoke steering wheel, you will not be able to get the speedo through the spokes, so instead you will have to loosen (but not remove) two more screws securing the steering column and lower it.

If you don't want to remove the speedo completely through the steering wheel, you can still follow the first two photos to loosen it and the with your hands feel the bulb holders at the back and replace accordingly. It's a bit tricky, but possible.

First of all, lower the steering wheel to the lowest point it can go.
Undo the two screws (yellow circles) holding the instrument panel outer cover. Wiggle it out carefully.


There are 3 screws holding the instrument panel in place. Remove all 3.


Carefully pull the Instrument panel outwards and disconnect the two wire clips connected to it.


Carefully wiggle it out. It will go through the steering wheel gap, but be careful not to brrake the ododmeter reset thingy


Now you can see the RC receiver within the green circle. Undo the two screws (highlighted within the yellow circles) and remove the Unit.

I am working on the same thing, but i cannot get the speedo through the spokes, whereabouts are these two screws you mentioned located?
I am a bit afraid of messing with the steering =S

Jeez gatos I thought you had cats for pets lol,looks like a lion has been living in the scrap car m8 the steering wheel has been eaten lol.or was that brother rasher or the thong,next time they come to visit they need to be fed bacon,otherwise they do eat car interiors and household furniture no table manners.

Make sure you disconnect the battery and wait for a few minutes before you start
You will need a T30 torx









Alternatively, if you do not want to remove the airbag and the steering wheel, there is another way that might be easier. Remove the cover in the drivers footwell



And undo the 4 bolts holding the steering column. Undo them most of the way, but not remove them completely. This should allow the steering wheel to drop enough to remove the speedo

lol. Exploded airbag Kieran. Cut it off to get it out of the way....

Wow, this was alot more advanced than i thought it would be, poor design =(

I shall go ahead by loosening the screws in the footwell and see how it goes!
I don't want to touch the airbag if i can avoid it

Well, i quickly found out the steering wheel cover is in the way, it was already removed on your pictures so i didn't think of it, looks like a pain to remove?

I am a little unsure of the easiest way to tackle this now, could it not be easier to lift the dashboard enough to pop it out?

Or should i go by removing the airbag to give it enough space?
