no drive to rear wheels!

hiya peeps, new to this so hopin' i'm in the right place!
i've got a '53 plate xc70 D5 auto.
i've had it up on blocks and put it in gear. the front wheels spin but the rear ones don't.
the prop shaft is also spinning to the rear.
there has been a message displayed on starting telling me that 'anti-skid is temporarily turned off' and i recently had the codes read which said 'communication error between modules'.
also recently had green flag out for another reason and the guy told me there was a solenoid that would have burned out and pointed down the front passenger side of the engine bay.

i would be very greatful if anyone can clarify what the prob is and better still let me know how to fix it! cheers!

I have had AWD - DEM / Haldex - problems where my AWD was working and then the Anti Skid message came and AWD was gone.
I went to Volvo who started by changing the cable to the DEM for £200 with no success and then said £1500 thank you very much for a new DEM. According to Volvo I would not have been able to use a second hand one.
I wanted to get my DEM fixed by BBA-reman and they sent it back as working. So another £1500 would have gone up in smoke with Volvo's trial and error, let the customer pay, approach.
I tried to fix it by changing the sensor in the DEM with no luck.
I then searched lots of Haldex forums and decided to get a complete Haldex clutch with DEM, sensor and pump which fixed the AWD problems. I just changed the filter as I was in there.
No more error messages and AWD working fine for the last 2 years.

This is normal , what makes you think you have a problem on the road ? Only on 2007 and later models with " Instant Traction" do all 4 rotate from standstill ...

thanks clan for your reply. i know i have a prob as there is a steep bank near me that i tried the awd out on. i used to be able to drive up it. if i stopped and tried to do a hill start while leaning out of the window i could see the rear wheel searching for traction.
one particular time i was going up nicely then all of a sudden started sliding backwards as i lost drive to the rear even though the front wheels were still turning!

If you are 100% sure that your propshaft is directly connected to the front wheels then The fault codes should give you a clue , if i had to guess i would say code DEM 0007 may be there which means a faulty oil pressure sensor in the haldex unit at the rear ..
Another code may indicate the electric oil pump in the same unit isnt working .. Its worth getting it investigated as you can get bits and pieces to repair it .

can't remember the code, just that it said comunication error between modules.
i've seen on another forum that a 7.5a fuse can blow in the luggage compartment fuse board at position 17. gonna go check that out now.

If you need to test NOW is the time. On snow. Switch off traction control and floor it. Have someone watch the rear wheels.

If you get a second hand unit straight away you may not have to save too much.
Volvo prices for me about 2 years ago:
DEM £1500 - not bought, but checked as Volvo claimed it was damaged
Pressure sensor £100 - replaced because of Volvo advice (DTC in VIDA)
Oil pump - not replaced but I think it was quoted at £300+
AOC clutch - I think quoted at another £1500

Complete AOC (Clutch,DEM,pump,pressure sensor) £350.

To replace it yourself with the car propped up one afternoon / half a day.

i have been out in the snow.........and got stuck, d'oh!
i do a bit of green laning and caravaning so the awd has been tested well. last year i was driving through drifts about two feet high (that's about 600mm in new money) and had to brake cos the snow was comin up and covering the screen.
i was going out seeking snow last year, parking on slippy slopes to see if it would pull away. i'm more than happy with the system when it's working but this year i'm relegated to the norm and feeling totally inadequate
my geen flag man mentioned having to program in new parts. did you find this needed to be done or was it a straight swap?

checked that fuse, clan, and i had found it blown and replaced it about two weeks ago but hadn't seen the position number on the board.
it obviously hasn't got the system up and runing again so maybe the green flag man is right. if the solenoid burned out that could have blown the fuse and now it's not drawing any juice the fuse stayed intact.

if anyone can tell me where to find the solenoid under the bonnet i could get it checked out. cheers

There is nothing under the bonnet to do with the AWD .. best get your dealer to do a diagnosis for you now that the fuse is ok ..

I did not need any software. The system was working straight away. Mine is a 2006 with the next Haldex up though.

You should get the codes read by a dealer and checked the AWD. Just don't go for expensive repair attempts straight away.
If you had access to a Volvo Dice you could some Haldex functions and sensors yourself.
