Default Carwash gearstick water fountain hell...what happened!?!

Hi all,
I took my Torslanda through a carwash yesterday and the most bizarre thing happened...as the wash cycle started, the underbody wash kicked in and suddenly my gearknob gaiter swelled up like a balloon and started spraying water out of the top like some sort of lawn sprinkler/fountain/pressure washer!

I sat there for what seemed like an eternity, grasping the top of the gaiter to try to stem the flow whilst getting absolutely soaked to the skin

Thankfully it eventually stopped and the rest of the wash carried on without incident. I've been airing it since and thankfully it's nearly dry inside now!

Any ideas as to what the heck went on? Is there a missing sprayguard somewhere? If I remove the gaiter I can see through to the road via the hatch for the gearstick. Is this normal? I've never had such a thing happen to me in all my born days, I felt like an extra in Gray Lady Down!!!

On many cars there is a rubber gaiter under the decorative fabric one.
The rubber one should be the seal against water ingress.

I only have the rubber one on the Torslanda, my 744 has a leather one on top of the rubber unit but no such luck on the Torsy...and the water still came past the rubber one alas!!

I don't believe there's a rubber seal under the visible gearstick gaiter - there is a foam soundproofing pad (sometimes? perhaps only certain cars?) but they have pretty much all disintegrated by now - and that wouldn't do much against a carwash anyway.

This is a replica:

Hand carwash might be the way forwards...

I’m not sure if this applies to your car but it does for a 1988 240:~
A large shaped foam piece is fitted under the rubber gaiter – sits on top of the gearbox & usually held in place by a flexible metal tab, should be possible to do as a retrofit if you wish.

Actually - if you want to replace the foam for sound deadening purposes this is what I did after a suggestion on a forum, it was a _lot_ cheaper than the replica piece.

Cheers

Thanks all!!

I'm 99% sure my car should have had the foam insulation thing at some point as I get a great deal of road noise through the gearstick porthole. I like the idea of fashioning a replacement a-la Bugjam! That's very cool.

I think it's probably been lost or discarded somewhere along the line as the box has been out twice recently to replace both the rear main seal and clutch. I'll get fettling!

Second to what Bugjam's pictured. Mine is almost exactly like that and work's a charm!

I got to it this afternoon...I found a microfibre demister sponge (once the microfibre outer was removed) slotted in perfectly when cut to let the stick slip in, and I peeled back the carpet and lined the transmission tunnel around the stick porthole with sticky backed silver soundproofing sheeting.

I then refitted the gaiter and secured the outer lip to the tunnel with a strip of soundproofing sheet on each side just for good measure, and refitted the carpet.

The difference is immense...the car is SO much quieter!! Absolutely blown away by the difference. So much so I'm now pondering soundproofing the bulkhead and bonnet...

Thanks again for all your help and advice!
