I've not had my XC60 long enough to say hand-on-heart that it's the best car I've ever owned - that accolade still belongs to the '03 V70 D5 SE which preceded it, and which was always going to be a very hard act to follow. But the XC60 is a definite close 2nd and is closing fast as we clock up the miles.

Current car XC60 SE Drive 2.4 175hp.
Ford Fiesta 1.4 2009 Renault Scenic 1.4 2004 Suzuki Jimny 1.3 2000 Ford Fiesta 1.1 1982 Ford Escort 1.3 1978 Vauxhall Cresta 3.3 PC 1970 Humber Sceptre 1750 1966 Reliant Regal 325 1966 Yamaha RD400 1977 Suzuki GT380 1976 Yamaha YDS7 1971 Suzuki TS125J 1973 Vans I have owned. Dodge Spacevan 1977 Escort van 1.1 1982 Escort van 1.8D 1993 Suzuki Carryvan 2001 Best was my Scenic then Humber then Reliant. Overall reliability was the 82 Fiesta that lasted nearly 20 years without any major problems. The Reliant seemed like a luxury to me after the bikes and had a great heater. Best van was the Suzuki and best bike the Suzuki GT380. |

I should make my contribution to this catalogue of useless information. It only covers the past 20 years when I made the decisions. Before that there was a dog's breakfast of employer issued cars where I had little say.
1990 Holden Calais 5 litre V8 sedan. Great car but expensive for fuel and speeding tickets. 1990 Holden Jackaroo. Our first SUV for her. Re-badged Isuzu Trooper, probably rebadged as Vauxhall in the UK. 1992 Holden Jackaroo. I liked hers so much. Needed a workhorse. 1995 Holden Jackaroo. Update 1998 Holden Jackaroo. Update 2001 Holden Jackaroo. Update 2005 Nissan X-Trail. Our first downsize. Holden Jackaroo discontinued. 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. Still my current car. 2009 Volvo XC60. We usually share each car, each driving for a few years. I need to tow a trailer occasionally for work, so we need that capability.

In reverse order.......(my sister in law worked at BMW so we got some great deals if you were wondering)..........
2009 Volvo XC60 D5 10MY - Saville, Great comfort, not so great economy, no sports car - love it. Best so far as a family car. 2008 Mini Cooper 1.6i - Red, 50mpg, great fun, use all the performance. No issues other than the kids are starting to complain about leg room. 2006 BMW 325i M Sport Touring (E91) - Silver, 30mpg, great car but quality issues, expensive tyres, don't make the mistake I did by going manual - never again! 2004 BMW 520i saloon (E60) - Grey, Lots of space, lots of rattles, terrible drivers seat. 2004 Ford Fiesta - Dull, dull, dull, dull, lots of space. 2003 BMW 320d (E46) saloon - Blue, Looks the dogs, He Man gearchange, 47mpg, HK Speakers ruined the boot space. Kids forced short ownership. 2001 BMW 325i Coupe (E46) - Blue, Looked great, lots of rattles, awfull standard fit hi-fi (upgrade on all cars since). 1998 VW Golf GTDi 3Dr - Yellow, rattles, lots of space, 60mpg, duff handling. 1996 Rover 216i 3Dr - Red, our first new car, lots loads a money, fun. Pre '96 lots of crap, rust and oil on the drive altough I will always have a soft spot for the Opel Manta. I have worked out that it doesn't matter what you spend, there will always be faults and rattles. I try to fix these myself there days. The Volvo's biggiest fault was the wind noise that I have now tracked down and the dealer fixed. Had it for a whole year though.

Ahhh, have very fond memories of the Manta 2.0 GTE Coupe and Cavalier 2.0 GLS Hatchback and a little rocket - the Opel Kadette Coupe 1.9 GTE/Rallye, GM did produce good cars once upon a time....

Great thread. Here's mine (in order):
Mini (Cooper lookalike) - first car. Handled like a dream. Drove it far too fast and how I survived into my twenties, God only knows :-) Ford Sierra Sapphire - rear wheel drive = loadsafun !! Ford Mondeo - boring and sensible. Alfa 147 - my baby, but then marriage and kids so... Honda CRV - superb but underated car. And the Honda customer service has yet to be surpassed. XC60 - current muse. I've never owned such a posh car and absolutely love it ! Oh...and I drove a Brabham BT38 for four years....now she was something special ! |

Snow tyres bought today My wife Ford Fiesta BL Metro Vauxhall Nova Vauxhall Astra Citroen BX Renault Laguna Volvo 440 Mondeo Lx Estate Mondeo V6 Estate Mondeo Tdci Estate Volvo XC60 D5 SE Lux - due yesterday...and waiting impatiently For Fun Sylva Striker X Flow Jedi Mk 4 R1 OMS 2000M Hayabusa OMS 2000M GSXR 1000 Needing a rest after that lot |

'02 VW Passat 1.9 tdi - boring '05 Citroen Picasso - dont ask '07 BMW 123d M Sport - Nice car to drive - not enough room in boot though '08 Audi A4 2.0 tdi S-Line Multitronic in Missano Red - loved it at first but then became too popular. '10 Volvo XC60 - love it, hopefully will not become too popular.

I wish I had all the money I've spent on cars!!
Since you’ve all put lots of effort into this thread I suppose I should go back a bit further than the last three cars. My car history starts back in the days of Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin, Argent, Yes and Pink Floyd, 1972 to be precise! The time of 8 tracks, cross ply’s and manually operated windows and steering.
So here goes: Ford Cortina Mk 2 1600GT - First car, loved it, a bit of a flyer. Ford Cortina 1600E – Executive version of the above, another fantastic car. Ford Cortina Mk3 2000 GXL – Liked the car but the Pinto engine let it down. Ford Escort Mk2 1600 Sport – White with red decals, looked the dogs. Ford Fiesta 1.3 Sport – Don’t know why I bought this. Toyota Corolla 1.6 Coupe – Liked this a lot but it got hit by a coal lorry. Mitsibushi Gallant 2000 GLS - Loads of extras like electric windows, power steering etc. this was a good car. Ford Sierra Sapphire 1.6 – A barge and it was beige. Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 1.8 GS – Just slightly better than the Siierra. VW Golf GTI 1.8 Mk2 – BBS alloys, fantastic car, became sold on German cars. VW Golf Mk3 Driver 1.8 – Looked ok, but not as good as the GTI. VW Golf GTI 2.0 Mk3 - Nearly new, a bit low on power. VW Passat 1.8 Sport – First new car! Unfortunately had a clutch judder which VW could not fix. VW Golf GTI 2.0 Turbo – 150 BHP, went well and looked the part. BMW 320 SE Coupe – First Auto box, and smooth in line six pot engine, fantastic car, wish I could have it back. BMW 325 M Sport Saloon – It was a manual, if only it was an auto…. Audi S3 – Mid life crisis, fantastic car mind you, 265BHP and Quattro but suspension was really hard. Volvo XC60 SE Premium R Design Geartronic – Longest name and most expensive I’ve ever bought, so far so good. I like it a lot, it’s got a bit of everything, luxurious, functional, decent power and four wheel drive. Going to buy a Caravan next year (sorry), so it should really excel at that. The reason for the thread? It was fun and…. There are many of us who purchased a Volvo product for the first time with previous ownership being quite diverse, all making comments on the XC 60 objective and valuable. |
