Default 940 bonnet hinge

It's a small thing (well, actually, a massive chunk of Swedish engineering) but it's brilliant. Being able to work under it unsupported at any angle, and be able to swing it all the way past vertical by moving the safety tabs. Just genius. Having had so many cars with saggy struts that give way in the breeze caused by a passing sparrow it really does make it a joy to work in the engine bay...

Makes it very handy for removing the engine and gearbox!

Default bonnet

Thanks for the reminder, I had thought that only the 960's had this feature.

If there is a bit of a breeze blowing then the bonnet can be blown down. A strategically located broom shank of the appropriate length is a wise precaution.

The phase 1 70-series cars have the same set up - it's very clever. The 960 has gas springs which will eventually wear out (mine did).

This is a very relative joy, applying as it does to work carried out from above. Meanwhile, those of us spending time on the hot side from underneathdong something as mundane as changing an oil filter? We wish a double hinge had been fitted to the entire exhaust system...

Try FCP Euro Jack, same struts are also used on the 760 and i couldn't find any in the UK at all when i needed them!

I managed to get some from a fellow VOC Forum member, and these are fitted and working beautifully. The old ones were knackered, and although they would hold the bonnet up on a still warm day, when the temperature dipped or there was any sort of a breeze a broom handle came in handy!

I've fitted new boot lid gas springs too, although these were easy to source on E-Bay.

That was the idea - you don't have to unbolt/reset the bonnet for those jobs - typical good thinking from Volvo.....

Having owned 940s since the late 1990s I have always wondered why Volvo made it so hard to do an oil and filter change. I guess they intended it to be done once a year at the Volvo garage.

I did an oil and filter change on my Mk2 Scirocco last week and it’s a breeze by comparison. The oil drain plug can be reached easily without having to crawl right under the car and can be undone with one of the standard sized metric spanners used everywhere else on the car. The filter can be changed easily from above.

I need to do one of the Volvos too but it will have to wait until I can face the palaver of trolley jack and axle stands and finding my 1” AF socket.
