Default Hello and general questions about the C70

Hi All,

First post. I've had my C70 II 2.4i for just over 2 years and been meaning to get on the forum for most of those two years, but life has just been in the way. Although I did register last December I think. I do like the car a lot, looks lovely in red, but I possibly should have looked for a T5 version as it's not quite enough power for me. It's no slouch, but I do miss the boost of a turbo!

Ok, so with that in mind, is it worth having the 2.4i remapped? Generic or proper map? Free flowing panel filter and exhaust give any gains?

Couple of niggles -

1. I've already had to remove the CEM and clean with electrical contact cleaner twice. First time around all the spades on all the fuses were grubby so all had to be cleaned! Second time around (last week) everything was clean, but still had all the error messages on the dash and the car wouldn't start. Is this a common issue? Is there a better solution to what I'm doing?

2. Headlights both have cracks in them and get moisture in them in the colder damper weather. Is there a decent way to fix this? Replacement lenses? Given that secondhand replacement units go for £350 and up on ebay,I'd rather not pay that!

Think that's it for now, although I'm sure I'll have more questions soon.

Cheers,

Pat

Hi Pat & welcome
I've had my C70 T5 since Feb. 2018, shortly after purchase the dash started displaying lots of different error messages and the car even went into limp mode a couple of times. I had the CEM cleaned and it's been fine for about 20 months now.

As for the headlights, google Volvo/Saab breakers in Nottingham, they will post & have helped me a couple of times, or try breakersyard.com and see what quotes they give you. Mine is a 2006 T5 auto, 220 bhp and it does have oomph, but thirsty, not sure what difference the later model 230 bhp is like but tax brackets can greatly differ on automatics, not so on the manual, so worth investigating

Hi Pat and welcome.

Afraid to say it but forget a remap on a non-turbo engine. I'm not aware of any performance specialist that does one for that engine and even if they did you'd be in single figure HP gains making it a rather pointless exercise.

If your headlamps are plastic lensed then replacement units are sadly your best option.

The CEM seems to be a common failure on these cars although thankfully ours has been ok. Check for signs of water ingress. Often the windscreen bonding fails in the top left corner allowing water in. Push the screen outwards from inside the top corner. Do you see it move/flex?

Hi Pat,

As said, the tuning options are limited on a 2.4i. Some remap companies (Quantum for example) claim +20bhp, but I don't know anyone who has had this done.

I've had a similar issue with a headlight crack. I've used this and its worked so far: -

Breakers are always expensive for 2nd hand nowadays, but keep an eye out for cars breaking on ebay. I've picked up a few useful bits recently.

Keep the questions coming. We need more C70 chat!!

The problem with the CEM is most likely the female terminals in the plugs have lost their grip on the 3 pairs of network wire male pins on the CEM , volvo have been repairing these for 15 years now and have repair terminals with about 6 inches of wire already crimped to make the job easier .

Cheers Fred, I will definitely google those breakers as I need a few other bits as well, which I've put an ad for in the wanted section. I kind of think I should have gone for the T5 C70 II and maybe that will be my next car. I'll be looking for a manual though!

Thanks for the welcome and info Iain. Yeah I thought it might not be worth having a remap, so I'll stick with just the K&N panel filter for now, which seems to make the engine a bit more responsive!

I couldn't see any sign of water ingress on or around the CEM, but I'll check the screen for signs of seal failure

Excellent! That looks like a good option! I was going to use clear CT1, but that looks more suitable. I was watching a "breaking" C70 on ebay a few weeks ago but it disappeared before I could message them!
