Default Exhaust Manifold washers

Hi folks,

Just a quick one, the big washers for the exhaust manifold are with the recess on one side, which side is that recess supposed to point towards the manifold or the nut, I didn't pay attention when I took them off so would like to be sure going back on the right way

Many Thanks

Your question intrigued me so I went outside with my torch to have a look at the rusty old buggers.

No idea, sorry.
I assume the nut side.
