The only person in the wrong here is yourself as if you had spoken to the dealer at the start explaining what you intended to do then they would have been able to assist you.

DVLA was applying and interpreting the rules and laws correctly.

That's one way of ending it...

I'm not that sure, though, that some third person, reading this forum in the search of knowledge, will find a very crucial information regarding export of a car..
Simple message- check beforehand.

But now its deleted..

Thank you for that, 'ThomasG'. Reading this thread without the benefit of your post left me wondering what on earth it was all about!

Regards, John.

I'll give the OP some time to resupply what he learned.
Otherwise, I'll fill the holes with what I remember of it.

Edit:
Oh bugger it, he's not active anyway, I don't know when/if he's coming back.
What I remember, and since I didn't expect him to delete the lot, the story has some holes:

chrisfr lives in France
Cars there being expensive and of high mileage, he calculated that buying in uk, changing lights and re registering in france will save him good 35% of cost compared with buying locally.

So he came here, bought one from dealer, drove over to France.
And tried to register it.
He had a look at DVLA site for guidance.
And followed it- if I remember correctly he needed V5 with previous owners name on it.
But in this particular case, previous owner was not a private person- it was dealer.
French side refused to accept V5.

He asked DVLA for document to be issued to UK address, namely- his mother, so he can finish registration process.
It was refused on grounds that car is already abroad.

After that, if I remember correctly, he contacted the dealer, who requested new V5 for new keeper, stating that new keeper will be chrisfs's mother.
DVLA issued document without problems.

Now you can jump to post 2 of this thread.

All that he learned was that if you want to save money whilst living in France be exporting a UK registered car to France is that the French rules are very strict and that DVLA will not assist you in meeting the French regulations if you do not follow the DVLA regulations

Really rather simple, but of course he saw it differently.

Really rather simple, but of course he saw it differently.
What I saw was you having a go at him for making a mistake and sharing his frustration caused by it.

I won't call it very productive and friendly approach.
Of course you can think differently.

As I stated in another thread- I don't mind
