1.9L Turbo exhaust manifold removal
Pierre,
This project is still in progress... unfortunately I can only work on it on weekends, so it's going to take me a while. I do have one question if you don't mind: I have a 2004 S40 Turbo (B4204T4 Engine). I've removed the 8 exhaust manifold nuts from the cylinder head, but I am having a hard time separating the exhaust manifold from the head so that I can remove the head. Do you know if this is possible that way, or do I need to also unbolt the manifold from the turbo or near the cat converter farther down? Am I just not prying it hard enough? If you're not sure, I'll post this as a new thread here. I appreciate your (or anyone's) input, tips, insight, or suggestions. Thanks again! |

That's also a great write-up by DWM. Thanks for the link. I see that he actually removed the whole exhaust manifold from the head, although his car doesn't have the turbo. I am probably going to remove it as well. I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for your help. |

Hi Pierre,
Thanks for the taking the time document the process. It's been vey helpful and detailed enough to follow as I'm busy sorting out someone lese's mess. I understand the process you outlined about resetting the vvt, rotate pass alignment by 1/4 turn and the turn counter clockwise to reach aligment. When reinstalling the vvt hub, I noticed that it has a movement of about 2 teeth within itself. When I took it off it was set at the left most position due to the resetting. It could only turn clock wise in the torqued position. Should one make sure that when installing it, internally it is set to the most left position, or middle, or most right? The alignment mark on the gear will be aligned to the cover. The non-vvt, i noticed you pointed that it should ideally be centered using the 3 bolts. This is guided by the gear to cover mark and tension of the belt between crank and intake. I hope my question make sense. Regards |

I also made video the next time I did the job. Editing is not great but you may see some tips tricks that assist.
