A question about gear knobs.
Hello,
My Volvo is V40 1.9D 2000 year. The gear knob is in very bad shape. This knob is with reverse gear left top. I cannot find anywhere a second hand knob. The one I have is exactly the same as the right one in page 4 in this thread -> https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showt...=104852&page=4 So there are some questions rising. Does anyone had measured the dimensions(size of the holes, depth?) of the knob so that I can order one from another car(aftermarket)? I'm asking this because I cannot get the knob off simply by hand and I'm worried if I break it using hammer, that I won't be able to drive ( I need this car for going to work). I read about the hammer here:x40 Phase 1 Gearshift control, replacement.pdf So I must have a new knob right away to replace it. Can it be disassembled in another way - maybe using wrenches and hammer? This is how it looks like now -> knob.jpg |

It's housed in a beige piece of plastic attached to the floor, under the gator. Four bolts, if I rememebr correctly. Basically you swap out the entire lever leaving the knob attached. The lever obviously needs disconnecting from the control rods underneath too.

Indeed this is one solution. But there's no need for such a intervention, only because of one knob. Which knob should be pulled off like in normal cars.

I don't think it's possible. I think they're moulded on. At least, I coudln't find a way.
Besides, four bolts isn't exactly hard to do. |

If it were me I'd remove the whole lever then get it in the vice in soft jaws and take a grinder to the knob until it's all cut away and there's just a metal shaft, then either thread it and then get a generic replacement thread on gear knob that shows the gears in the right place, or if threading isn't possible drill a small hole somewhere low down on the new knob and thread that, a smear of epoxy resin, fit it to the shaft and then a grub screw in the threaded hole for added strength, job done.

Maybe the gear shifter melted in the heat?
