Question "Non Transferable Number Plate"

Hi all,

I've been through a fair few cars recently for one reason or another and I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the above appear on the new style log book??

I've had it 3 times now, ranging from a '95 "M" to a MY "52" and to me it seems to be standard fodder.

So now, it seems that the days of buying a car with a good number plate and selling the plate to recoup some of the cost of the car have gone

Presumably this is because the DVLA just can't be ar5ed with them!

It's usually because the car had a personalised plate on it in the past, which a previous owner has transferred onto another car. The DVLA then has to give the car a new reg number, which for some reason they make non-transferrable. My Audi has a non-transferrable reg number for this reason.

I used to own a 1963 Morris Oxford which the previous owner "plate raped". The DVLA issued a replacement reg number to match its age, but this too was non-transferrable.

A fair point I suppose, but I've had it 3 times in the last 6 months, surely not a coincidence??

I've also known it on ex. Manufacturer/Import fleet cars.

If you have a pre 2001 Volvo with a plate ending 'UD' it'll probably non-transferrable and the same for a VAG group car end 'NV'.

I was told this so that other people couldn't transfer the plate onto a poorly mainted vehicle and try to pass it off as ex-manufacturer's fleet.

It is possible to have it on every used car that you purchase. I have a couple on the road just now with exactly that message on the V5C. All because a previous owner has registered a personal plate to the car and then retained the plate when moving the car on. One of them is 'AUD' (probable ex-Volvo demonstrator) and the other is because of a retained plate.

Guys, this is really useful to note purely because it's something I'll need to watch out for when I buy my next car. I'll be planning to transfer "my" reg, as I always do, so if I bought a car with a non-transferrable reg already on it, I wouldn't be able to put my own reg on it after purchase. This wouldn't be a problem if I were buying a Ford Focus or something common, but something like a 760 or 940 diesel when there's no real alternative on the market would be a bummer.

No, you could transfer your personalised reg onto a car with a "non-transferable reg", but the number thats already on it wouldn't be transferable to anything else, and would be lost.

.
"UD" is just standard issue from the Gloucester car dealers ( if it is a volvo or any other car ) , FUD MUD DUD etc nothing special about that .
