Default starts sluggish

hi hope someone can help me.
the other day driving my s60 d5 2005 it just stopped, engine would crank but not start. AA man came out and said it was cam sensor, so fitted a new one still wouldnt start was told to change crank sensor so i did still wouldnt start.
took it to a diesel specialist who got it going, he told me it was bad fuel he had drained the system and put fresh diesel in and the car was fine...
but now when i start it more so from cold it sterts very sluggish almost as if it isnt going to start but then fires up at the last min.
any ideas what could be wrong a ny tips on how to fix
thanks im a new user so sorry if this has been covered before
dave

If it really was bad fuel, changing the fuel filter would be a good idea. Recommended these be changed every two years or 24000 miles. They have been known to cause starting problems if left past the best before date.

A failing in tank pump would make it hard to start . The engine will start even with a completely failed pump if there is some residual pressure in the system . A failing in tank pump can go unoticed or intermittant for a long time until you get power loss and starting problems but these symptoms can be down to something else altogether . I agree try replacing the fuel filter , could also be an injector , I would get the codes checked first with DICE or VCT2000 . I think dirty fuel has been the main cause of in tank pump failures on my D5 as there is nothing but a gauze filter to protect it , the main fuel filter is after the pump . Is yours a Euro 3 or Euro 4 D5 ?

How old is the battery? I've just had a new one fitted to mine and I didn't realise how bad the starting was until if was fitted. It spins over much faster now. Excessive cranking with the original problem could have hurt it.

First question is are the new cam and crank sensors still on the car?
Do you have the original sensors still?
Were the new sensors 'Volvo' ones or not?
Were the new ones brand new or not?
Did the diesel specialist change the fuel filter at all?
Does the engine turn over as normal but just not fire straight away (does it crank at the correct speed)?
Once started does it re-start good/bad after a short stop (popping into a shop)?

My thoughts are with two things really:

1. None genuine sensors used which may be causing the problem

2. You have a very slight air leak in the fuel system and fuel is leaking back to the tank (very slowly) - thus when you come to start the car it is taking a few extra crank cycles to get the fuel back through and be able to fire up.

My thoughts for now anyway.
