Default Buying. What to look out for?

Been lurking for a while, and have decided that 15 years after getting rid of my 120 I'm going to come back to Volvo and get a post 2007 XC70. Need something for a weekly 300 mile round trip commute; a couple of trips to southern France a year; getting to my house up a mile of fairly steep, rocky track; and very occasionally pulling a 2 ton trailer. Sound OK so far?

I've got about £15K to play with. Could possibly squeeze a bit more if really needed.

Can anyone advise on whether there are significant benefits in fuel consumption or reliability that are likely to come at a certain age? Also, the only recurring worry I've spotted is power steering pipes breaking up and noisy pumps / heavy steering. Is this something that only afflicts a certain age? And anything else I should particularly look out for?

Your comments are very much appreciated.

Ta. Rob.

The twin-turbo engines seem to offer a step up in fuel economy, as well as performance, over the older engines. The 163bhp D4 AWD (but not the fwd) can be remapped up to 200+ by Polestar, basically making it a D5. The economy bump therefore comes in 2010. The next jump is for the VEA engine, but that's way out of your budget.

I'd go for a D3 (163ps) later badged as D4.
