I have dealt with Volvo main dealer since I got the car and bought it from a Volvo main dealer and my understanding was that it was always serviced by that dealer.

turns out to be a head gasket problem. The garage are "skimming" the head and they say it should be perfect.

is it a volvo dealer ? If not make sure they examine the top of the cylinder liners VERY carefullyall the way around with a magnifying glass for cracks or you will be back to square one ... volvo head gaskets don't " go" without a good reason ... and skimming isn't going to fix anything it won't have warped unless it has got seriously overheated with major coolant loss ....

ok that's good , Have they given the cause of the actual headgasket failure and also how much the head has warped if at all ? They have a straight edge as part of their mandatory tool kit and should be able to tell you , have they actually done a straight edge test ? As i Said Volvo head gaskets don't just " go" another independent fault causes it to fail . It would also be in your interest if you ask the question " Have you checked the tops of the cylinder liners for cracks ?"

There appears to be an issue which was not of my making and which only became apparent on opening the head. In any event they hope to fix the problem.

got the car back. There was a small leak in the head gasket which would only leak at certain times it was so small apparently. There was no buckle so as it is fixed there should be no other issues it turns out. I am happy enough the way it worked out and all was done under warranty. Thanks all for their input.
