Good luck with reflowing the joints, can take time desoldering, cleaning, fluxing then resoldering but worth it in the end. Also the final clean with a soft wire brush and isopropyl alcohol makes all the difference as well.

As for the "Aisin Warner" label on the relay - it's a bit of a giveaway lol!

Where was it hiding in the end?

The relay was in the location as shown in various images of the relay area. it was just the size and colour of the relay that threw me, wasnt expecting a green "double size" one to be in the place of a normal size white one.

thats why i did ask first, just incase on the "SE"'s they had moved it elswhere, like they do with other bits of kit.

just a little surprised no one else suggested it might be a different size/colour relay.

No, not still in bed!
am waiting for a bit of better weather to do another oil change on the box. BUT in the meantime, been trying to source a filter and gasket for the box. Yep, can get a filter screen in the UK, from a auto specialist, BUT not the gasket whuch fits between the screen and the underside of the valve block, yep its also nls with Volvo too. So had to turn to the states....a screen, gasket and sump seal....£11, plus postage....of £11 funnily enough...just have to wait its arrival.
So when this arrives, will drop the oil, swap out the filter screen, replace sump gasket, and refill with oil, so that should see the oil side of things "as good as" so to speak.
then see what happens from there.

Thanks for the link, interesting site, but even they dont list the filter screen gasket. I will await delivery from the States as planned.

No problem, it might come in handy for the future though. Had a quick look at the filter housing they list, i'd make a guess it's a standard paper gasket so you could probably make one if necessary.

That's what i did for the extension housing gasket when the bush/bearing was replaced on mine.

Smile Result !!

Sorry for the lengthy delay, but its taken till now to FINALLY get a result.
Ok, so once the bad weather cleared, I managed to get underneath the Volvo and change out the auto filter and gasket. This of course then resulted in a third oil change.......NOTHING.....still the same.

So, tried a replacement solenoid for the overdrive operation......again...no difference.

So, after a lot of searching, came up with a replacement auto box from a slightly lower miler than mine, this one had only covered a mere 100,000.....BUT at £125 I wasn't going to argue as other boxes with higher miles were fetching over £800 !!

I then tried for 2 weeks to find a garage who would undertake swapping the box....yet another daunting task as any ordinary clutch centre did not want to know, so ended up at an auto specialists, they had the car overnight and swapped it no problem.

RESULT .....we now have 4th overdrive, all gears working fine. no issues, no whines, I let them change the auto filter whilst out of the car, so all good for 12 months before next change according to them.

The did have a look inside the box for me as they were as intrigued as myself as to why a Volvo box had lost a gear........4th overdrive lining had worn off 2 of the drive plates. that's why no debris in the sump, so they presumed it had been a sticking valve had caused the overdrive oil pressure to fluctuate and slip the lining off, end result was no overdrive at all.

End story : OIL changes keep the oil clean and reduce the risk of anything clogging off an oilway or valve.

My own fault for not doing the box oil earlier.

here endeth the lesson.......total bill £500 [inc the box and bit I bought] but at least my 940 in back in full action.

Thanks again to all those who inputted to this thread, but had to leave until now to give full closeure.
