Exclamation 04 XC70 - Cambelt 'Safe' engine Question

Unfortunately today my 04' XC70 went into limp mode while driving at 60/65mph. No warning lights on the dash but a ticking noise coming from the auxiliary belt side of the engine (O/S). My action was to stop, shut off engine wait the AA.

The problem; The auxiliary belt had started to strip, the resulting cord momentarily passed around the inside face of the cambelt, which runs in parallel around the crank pulley, effectively side by side. Causing the cambelt to slip.

The car is now at the dealership waiting a prognosis as to wether the valves have crowded the pistons or not.

Does anyone know if the engine is a safe engine if a cambelt snaps??

If nobody knows I will update this thread so that others may learn how a simple auxiliary belt could cause catastrophic engine damage.

As far as I'm aware none of the engines offered in the XC70 are 'safe' after a cambelt failure.

It's pretty well known that an aux belt failure can cause the cam belt to fail, hence why they're usually changed along with the cambelt, or at a similar service interval.

Nope - the valves will collide with the pistons. If the engine was still running when you pulled over, you may be lucky.
Could the ticking have been the aux belt flailing around?

Yes the belt had stripped off a cord and was thrashing around, the engine was ticking as if the valves were open on TDC, the AA guy thought it may of only slipped a few degrees.
It didn't sound catastrophic metal to metal though.... fingers crossed,legs crossed, eye's definitely crossed :/

Hi Paul,
Good Luck, also if the cambelt is to loose , the engine will have valve train rattle as there will be back lash, so I hope it is just that, but like others have said you may not be so lucky,

The dealership has been in touch and as pre-agreed they reset the timing and found the cambelt to be 3 tooth positions out. They then rotated the crank manually to feel for valve friction before/after TDC. Which they did find. The resulting conversation with the Master Tech confirms some of the exhaust valves are bent. Oh dear... there is another possible issue, has the head suffered any damage? We won't know unless its removed for inspection.

So the bill will be between £2500 and £3000 for the dealer to carry out the repair, and this could rise if the head has any damage.

The decision has been made for the XC70 to return home and I will be doing the removal of the head (stage 1) to assess for head damage.

Can anyone recommend best place for Genuine parts?

Time it up yourself and see if it runs first. Never take dealer opinion as fact.

Question not a statement, but assuming that things aren't great, wouldn't a replacement engine be the more economical route?
