Electrical: How to fit 960 light up window switches

later 940/960 switches have a light up facility when the ignition is on, they look much better than the standard 240 switches as the little pic of the widow lights up!! they take around 10 mins to change and make a big improvement.you must buy 5 pin switches as four pin will not work

tools needed........ torx 25 bit and long handle. small thin flat screwdriver.

first remove the rubber screw bungs and then remove the torx bits and the handle comes away but careful not to pull switch too far as to stretch the wires.


make a note of which wire fits which switch, the wires will only fit onto the switches one way so its impossible to fit new switches wrong way round.


once removed the switches look like this from the rear


now using the small flat screwdriver carefully push down the edge of a switch and prise tab backwards, dont worry about bending the peg as when switch is removed it pushes back into place


once both pegs are prised back the switch pushes out from the front


fitting the new switches is a revesal, just push in the new switch and connect the wires and test before refitting arm rest. hold switch in clasped hand and you will see it lit up,if you have rear electric windows and you find its not working dont panic check the window lock button on drivers switch pack!!

once finished you should now have nice new switches, now wait till dark and view your work!!

Just found this thread - a very big thank you! Bit of a technical question, is it a bulb inside the switch or an LED? Also what colour or is it just white from the bulb?

Also, do the mirror adjustment stalks light up as well and again, same question - LED or bulb?

its a very low wattage bulb inside the switches that you cant replace, mine e white but some i belive are a yellow colour, the electric mirror switches down by the handbrake do not light up........

Thanks, i know the ones you mean. Also forgot yours is a 240, the mirror switches are on the same pack on mine (740) so bit of a silly question on my part!

Had a look on fleabay for Volvo window switches and unless i'm very much mistaken the 850 switches look to be a straight swap. There's a set on there at the moment with the "Auto" up/down function and what appears to be the relay that controls it so i might just go mad and buy it and figure the rest out when it gets here!

In the past i've replaced the bulbs in window switches and similar with "grain of wheat" bulbs which are basically the same. Since then i've also converted the bulbs in the switches in my Rover from allegedly non-replaceable grain of wheat bulbs to LED operation so now i know what i'm looking at it makes life a lot easier so thank you very much!

If i go for that switch pack and convert it, i'll take photos and post it up here as it might be useful if the bulbs fail in your switches.

If I remember correctly the 850 switches are soldered into the switch pack, I don't think they even have pins. The auto-down function is controlled by a separate relay, you can remove this and splice it into a 240 though, there are quite a few non car-specific guides to doing this on the net.

All the 940/960 switches I have use a 3mm LED which is permanently fixed, and glow a pale green colour.

Thanks Wooble - that begs the question about whether 740 switches are soldered in or have pins too, if i get time today i'll try to find out.

Obviously a man after my own heart, using LEDs to replace dead bulbs and/or fit lighting where there previously wasn't! For example :

The first pic is the window/mirror switchpack from my Rover which originally only had a faint red glow in the bar/line between the front and rear window switches - disappointingly minimal for a "Flagship" model even back in 1994! I've had older flagship BL/ARG models that had switch illumination in all switches - one particular model even used a single bulb and a Medusa-like nest of fibre-optic cables to provide light to each switch!
Second pic is more self explanatory, the instrument cluster from my 740. Very quick and simple change using these :

Now i have the bug for doing it, hence wanting to "upgrade" my 740 switches - again disappointingly minimal for a flagship car! I mean, they give you heated leather seats but no illumination in the window switches, can't understand that myself!

So with front windows only being electric on the SE, are there suitable illuminated switches available? Does one just use some switches from a 960? Does one need to get more than just the switches?

First you have to find out whether you have 4-pin or 5-pin switches then find the same sort from a 960 with the window symbol on.

They are "plug'n'play" and depending whether you buy the whole switch pack or just the two switches you need changes your next course of action. Either way the switch pack has to come out of the drivers door.

Don't forget to get an extra switch for the front passenger so you'll need 3 in total.

If yours are 5 pin i might have a couple of spares, i bought a "mixed bag" as i didn't know if mine were 4 or 5 pin until after i had bought them.
