Default Front Suspension & Sub Frame finish

Hello, is there a particular colour / paint code for the frame? I'm about to strip down, de-grease and wondered that the best hand painted or aerosol finish would be.

Many thanks
Grant

Late cars 65 on were grey with black wishbones. I would brush rather than rattle can.
Early cars pre 65 were either black or body colour

I would get them galvanised , probably cheaper and less time consuming than painting and will last forever unlike pained steel .

Galvanising OK for the cross member but can cause embrittlement which is bad for suspension parts. Not easy to paint either. If you are going mad I'd consider powder coating but even that has problems. A good chassis paint or tractor engine paint (grey available and very tough) a cheaper option and very brush friendly. Blast first to find any spots, rust or cracks, that need repairing. Repair shock tower tops if needed, with a formed plate or a heavy washer welded in.

Cool

Mine is 100% the same including the shocks,as north NH... Black , original on my 67....absolutely no evidence of grey when stripping down.

Most of volvos crossmembers , subframes and suspension arms are galvanised ( Unless Ford related ) . you don't usually paint galvanised components, they go grey after a few months and stay like that . .

Many thanks. Have removed all the dirt from the frame and discovered a light grey colour.

I have decided to use the 3 stage POR15 system. It seems that as long as the prep is 100% the results should last well. I will hand paint the small parts and see how that works for the frame too.
