This may be a bit late but back when I used to run 2-series cars if I had to do any head gasket replacement work I would always ensure that the recess for each head bolt had no oil left in it. I used a strip of paper kitchen towel rolled into a cigar shape and then twisted it in to the bolt hole. This would draw in any surplus oil. (Repeat until the paper towel was virtually clean on withdrawal.)
This way the bolts would all turn fully home into the block and the head would be fully tightened down with a full seal on the gasket.

Hello!
A few weeks later... I did find a leak at the cam cover seal, producing some oil dripping on the head cylinder gasket. It was unproperly postionned. I added some high quality, high temperature silicon paste. But I was not so sure the problem was solved, everything was so oily... So I decide to perform a big test drive for the holidays: 1000km in one day from Toulouse to Brittanny (and Jersey in the end :-)). And it worked perfectly, no fluid consumption, no smoke, decent gas mileage (8.5 to 10l/100km) even at 135-140km/h. The region of the leak is now almost dry... victory! Thanks everybody!

Just came across this topic and don't claim to have read many of the posts. Just to say that many years ago I had a 740 with a B200E engine and that I had exactly the same issue as the OP, the belt jumping 2 teeth. Because of time constrants I took it into a garage. (A Volvo indie). They could not explain the cause. The belt was low milege, in good condition, a genuine Volvo part, the tensioner was properly adjusted, tight etc, etc. Never happened again, at least up to 167k.
That was my favourate car in 54 years of motoring. Frank |
