Question fault code

Forgive my ignorance please but will some kind member help me. I am having cut out problems with my 850. I have seen on the forum reference to locating a fault code for which diagnostic equipment is required and apparently plugs into the engines "brain".To diagnose my cars problem do I need to book my car into one of our wonderful Spanish main dealers!!! or can I buy the equipement and if so, is it very expensive.Any advice will be much appreciated. Thanks..Jack

Your car could have one of two engine management systems, the method of reading fault codes is different for each one.

If you have a look at the first photo in this link:

http://volvospeed.com/Repair/sbelt70.php

You will see a black box on the bottom left of the picture with a yellow sticker on it.

If you remove the box lid you will see some ECU's in there.

As your car is automatic there will be one ECU for the gearbox, there may be one or two further ECU's for the engine management system.

If you post back with the number of ECU's you find I'll be able to help further.

Electronic Control Module (ECU)

Each will be in an aluminium box which slides into the black box I refered to earlier, it will be obvious how many there are once you have the lid off.

Fingers crossed for 3...
2 means you will need to buy a code reader....

Cheers

Hi Chris, I found the box which has a metal strap round it. There is a diagram on top showing three pulleys with a belt round them. The strap retaining bolt won`t budge. A friend has recomended an electrical diagnostic guy who is very reasonable. I think I would rather pay him than break something myself. Thank you very much for your kind offer of help.Jack.

Up to you, it wont matter if you do break the bolt, the strap is no use it can be thrown away.

Come back if you find you find your contact can't read codes form the car.

Chris,
Is it not a option the OP could try the flashcode reader incase he has the Jetronic, or is this likely to irritate a 4.4 ecu?, if infact this is installed...Is the engine type number not going to help?
Cheers
