Are they doing a cylinder leakage test before replacing the cooler again?
That's what they did on mine and it failed. The technician reckons it's the piston rings causing blow by and blocking the cooler, due to low mileage (30k), supermarket fuel and driving style. It's low mileage but not used for short trips as I have another car for running round. Supermarket fuel yes. Driven quite hard, I don't know if that's good or bad. Anyway, mines at the dealers having a new engine fitted so I hope yours hasn't gone the same way.

But supermarket diesel meets BS/EN590, so surely it shouldn't cause such problems? The rest of the explanation also sounds like random guessing (or an excuse?).

It is booked in for this Friday, for the technician to "diagnose" - or to plug in an OBDII diagnostic machine and read the P04d9 fault code that I have already given them. I am hoping that the fix is for Volvo to go yes it needs a revised EGR Cooler, here have one FOC, including fitting. But I will wait and see. |

The cylinder leakage test failed (60% on cylinder 1, from 17% to 20% on other cylinders)(june 2018). Volvo asks me to pay for opening the engine in order to check the cylinder head (breech). I refuse to pay for a problem linked to many EGR system failure. Volvo said that my case is unique ! Volvo will replace for the 3rd time the cooler (march 2016 and october 2017)... but everyone knows that in 30000kms the cooler will be full again... Volvo was known for longevity cars... but it was in the past... ChrisV60 => your car has cylinders leaks ? What did Volvo do ? Did they participate ? Thanks |

So a lot of people seem to have the slightly older The D4204T5[153] (73) delivers 181 PS (133 kW; 179 hp) at 4250rpm and 400 N⋅m (300 lb⋅ft) of torque between 17502500rpm. Twin turbochargers.
On a 67 plate with the 190 engine I believe I have The D4204T14[115] (A8) delivers 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) at 4250rpm and 400 N⋅m (300 lb⋅ft) of torque between 17502500rpm. Twin turbochargers. So the engine code is different... I would imagine there is a high degree of well.. almost identical design. On the higher power output engine have any of the issues been discussed here been remedied? I gather it will have the updated ego cooler but have they changed much else?

Now I have a very curious issue. On Saturday, my car threw up the check engine light, and error code P04d9...... Drove the car on Sunday about a 20 mile return journey, the check engine light was still on for both parts of the journey.
Left the car overnight on Sunday night, and all day today, and when I needed the car this evening, started up and the check engine light is gone, after I have booked the car into the local dealer to get the fault diagnosed. So two questions..... does the ECU store fault codes after the check engine light is gone? And if not is there any point in taking the car in to the local dealer to get a diagnosis done? |

Fortunately Volvo have agreed to contribute 90%, so not quite as bad as it could have been and at least I now have a 12 month warranty on the engine. The cooler was replaced again, apparently it has been revised with wider bores since the 'final fix' I'd already had. Strange though that it never burnt oil and pulled like a train even with the EML on, apart from a slight hesitation during warm up.
