Default Insurance query

I am currently getting a 240 back into running order after its owner died and the car has sat on his sisters driveway.
On contacting my multi-vehicle insurance brokers, to arrange cover so I could use the car in my name if I buy it, I was asked its date of first registration. I said the V5 had been lost so couldn't advise, to which they wouldn't insure it. They had the registration, and presumably can look up its details on the 'net as I can, but wouldn't.
So it seems I have to be illegal when I get to the stage of driving it round the block? I don't own the vehicle yet (if I ever do - the sister is sentimental - I might just get it running for her) so can't apply for a new V5 and she understandably doesn't want to donate £25 to the DVLAs coffers - she doesn't drive anyway....
Is this normal practice nowadays or was my broker being a bureaucratic pain?

Surely all you have to do is type the reg into one of the online comparison sites and it will give you a quote for the vehicle, at least that is what I do. It will give you an indication as to roughly what costs are involved.

When I bought my V40 - it was a blind purchase on ebay. All I had was the registration and the owners name and address. I was in Northampton and the car was in Twickenham. I phoned the insurers of my then current V40, told them what I had done and needed a month cover on my current policy to cover bringing the new car home. £20 on a debit card over the phone and all was done. I then took the train down and drove the car back knowing I was fully covered.

Insurers will willingly lend you an umbrella - and charge you handsomely for it - but, then ask for it back at the first sight of rain.

It has to be registered before it can go on the road.

The insurer was being a bit of a pain.

Just put the details in here: https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

and phone the insurer again, using the month of first registration it gives you.
