Slight clunk driving away after washing the car, nothing unusual about that, however there was an unusual squeak from the back at low speed and the handbrake bit after one click instead of three/four. Thought I'd better bring forward the job of repalcing the rear discs/pads shoes. Glad I did. This is on an 04 plate BTW.

for someone with inexperience with brake lining, can you tell me exactly where I should be looking for this problem - is it within the drum assembly somewhere?
Thank you please!

In the drum. You'll have to take the disc off to see, so for what it costs you may as well change them. Mine were shot to bits and floating in the botom of the drum - very lucky. I'll be changing them every couple of years as a matter of course after seeing these pics.

How much did it cost you for the bits, DC?

I had one in at work today, which had done the same as seen in the original pic. Was an XC.. shoes, hub, shoe kit, bolts, backplate and a handbrake cable. Bits came to around £450+ I believe! Was a real mess, but straightforward(ish) to do. Handbrake cable replacement was the worst part! Local dealer has sold 4x these parts this year alone..

Full Set of Rear Brake Pads - 30648382 £34.38, Pair of Rear Brake Disks - 9434167 x2 £79.62 for the pair. I also had to change both hand brake cables as one was a bit stiff and would not let the system adjust properly. Tried to change one, but they had streched so much that I had to change the other. £42.49 each. As Tiff says, the handbrake cable was the worst as my pull through string broke when I was feeding the cable into the car.

Did my 850's rear brakes, pads, discs & handbrake shoes about a month ago. And yes, one side the friction stuff was loose inside the 'drum' bit of the disc. T'other side the friction stuff had dissapeared!

I'm another lucky one.

I got my parts from a frenchy web-shop on 24 hrs delivery, due to not wanting to wait for usual delivery from 'here'. Sort of needed a handbrake!

So ended up with Bendix pads & discs with Bosch shoes.

Wow! I seem to have dodged a bullet!
My V70 LH handbrake shoes disintegrated last week but I got away with just a knocking noise plus binding brakes. Could have been much worse obviously!
